What work ethic???? city drivers get paid by hour so why in the hell would anyone kill themselves for $29 an hour??? 1.5 stops per hour is good enough for me per hour... and road drivers all you do is sit back and drive the damn truck... so you comparing old/young workers is honestly stupid because I can be 25 or 65 I will still work the same.. we all come to work to get paid on friday morning not to impress no damn purple shirt...... it doesnt have to do with if your an old timer or not it just has to do with if your smart enough to work smart and safe for your buck....
all road drivers do is sit back and drive the truck, ok. you just showed us your work ethic and mental status in one sentence. good job driver

The road drivers earn their $, without a doubt, especially the night guys that do dock work. Yeah, they make good $, but they earn every cent of it.

Leave out at 8pm,drive 198mi,break a set, jump on a forklift for 5hrs, assemble a set as the sun is coming up, then drive home, break a set, fuel. Go home after 14hrs. They are definitely not overpaid.

I still contend that city drivers need $ that's more in line with the road. City carrying its own hazards, and risks not typically found on the road, + dealing with customers.

One, maybe 2 pay scales. Top being $35hr, and $33hr for the other, as of today.

I agree

Couldn’t agree more and I’m on the road side of this. Most (not all) city drivers bust their asses. Not an easy job at all

Overall I think city has it harder than road. Although I don’t see 14 hr days anymore when I first started I would come in do pickups/swaps and then jump on the dock for the rest of my 8 hrs and around 11-12 pm I would be dispatched out to run a set down to the hub and then go to the rail yard or bring a set back. Heck I see a few road drivers at my center bring pillows with them so they can nap while they wait for their dispatch. It really comes down to your seniority, guys on the bottom of the road work the dock like crazy while you have others that take naps. Same goes for the city there’s guys that get the cake runs no lift gates or pups just bumping docks all day.

Well, that’s s time honored tradition I suppose. Always has been, probably always will be. Bottom guy always takes it from behind

How many times are we going to go down this rabbit hole??

City and road wages are determined by the industry as a whole with almost every company staying within reason in order to retain quality talent while remaining competitive, period.

For as long as I can remember LTL linehaul/road drivers ran the system (leave on Sun, home on Sat) and it’s mostly this reason for the wage discrepancy. Many companies such as YRC, ABF, OD, Estes, etc still use the “run the system” strategy as part of their linehaul operation while companies like XPO and FXFE primarily use “meet and turns”. Many of our drivers today probably don’t realize that even our road drivers ran the system during our early years...how many of them would be so quick to sign up for the road if we still ran the system??

Back to the present...now that our road is primarily meet and turn, it’s been proven over the last several years that city drivers have been getting double the raise in some cases over the road in order to close the wage gap. The last several years has seen the road getting around a 1.5% raise while the city gets 3%+...and that’s ok with me, city drivers work hard for their money and deserve whatever they can get but so do road drivers. We’re all in this together, cogs in the wheel, and it takes all of us to make the wheel go round!!

I put 7 years as a city driver. I understand where they are coming from. I'm a road driver now but what pisses me off is some of these city guys saying road doesnt do ::shit::. They earn their money . Most of us log at least 12 hrs a day. Plus there are situations where things take longer than they should like let's say a hook in the wintertime etc. If you have a day run great but most of the time when you start off on road you start on nights mixed with dock. If you want to be ignorant and insultive and sling your city slicker ::shit:: this way just know that your not fooling the guys that have been here awhile. Alot of us road drivers were city at one time. So dont go around slinging your bullshit like you know better. Now with that said I'm all about people making more money. When I was in the city I would take Saturday runs or tey for something extra. If you really think about it when a road driver makes more than you they are most likely logging around 60 hrs a week. Some more. It makes sense to me as to why things are the way they are and that's why I went to the road. I want the higher income and dont mind working extra hour . Some people just want to bitch about everything and anything simply because they want what you go . I got some advice for ya. If u want it then make a change. I know a guy that had 16 yrs in the city he gave it up to come to the road. Hes suffering thru runs being cut etc. He made a decision and it will pay off with time. Be happy with where your at or make a chang . That is all.

Really depends on the length of the run.

I do both City and Road. Our shortest Road runs equate to about an avg 8hr day in the City. Our longest Road runs far outweigh any City work. 650 miles plus hook, drop, TO, fuel over 11 or 12 hours will earn you much more money than a City guy on the clock for 12 hours.

Not sure if you meant to respond to my post since yours has no relevance to what I posted, but I’ll take a stab at responding anyways...

We’ve been down this hole before as well...if you take what a road driver makes for a 650 mile run plus fixed task pay and divide by how many hours it takes to cover said run, then compare that to what a city driver would make for working the same amount of hours (and don’t forget time and a half for anything over 8 hours), and you’ll find that the difference in pay isn’t as far apart as most would think it to be!!

About a hundred dollars a day. Or “only” $500.00 a week. Or “only” $26000.00 a year.

On a perfect day every day of the year, correct...get caught in construction backup, city drivers are still getting paid, the road doesn’t...rush hour traffic backed up, city drivers are still getting paid, the road doesn’t...inclement weather, the city packs up and goes home, the road doesn’t...your child gets hurt at school, the city driver leaves early to be with their child, the road driver doesn’t...I could go on and on, is it really worth the extra $100 a day, on a perfect day??
