Yellow | New Penn Synergy?

After the Teamster strike in 1994, Roadway Express was spun off by the parent company Roadway Services.
Many thought Roadway Express was spun off to die. But the opposite happen. Roadway Express under the leadership of Michael Wickham prospered. The company and it's Teamster employees started working together with a new program called Empowerment. Teamsters working without supervision. Where I worked Albuquerque, we Teamsters ran all the dock shifts entirely on our own. After the buyout in 2002? things still went well. After the merger talk in late 2008 I decided it was time to go. My retirement stated 06/01/2009 at age 58. If not for the buyout, based on how things were going with Roadway Express, who knows where they would be today. Myself I would of stayed around longer.

I left at 62 and a half. I had to be of age. And get my ducks in a row.
Get all paid off and no debt to leave. I (we) did that. I can't say I. My wife was a huge part in getting it done.
Had it stayed Roadway and with the program you mentioned no doubt I would have stayed. No doubt. It was the best thing they could have done. Let us run it at our level. We did a damn good job.
Example....
Now. If you have a full trailer going 200 miles south of our terminal.
One bill. They still send it to okc or Memphis. Take it 2 - 400 miles north and then send it back. Why? They would never do that back then. Never.
That. Is just the tip of the iceberg. And this is the type of reasoning that drove me mad. But it was out of my hands up until I could control my own future. They can send it to Alaska and back now I wouldn't care. Lol.
People. Shippers. Even after 10 plus years do not know who yrc is.
That in itself is a joke. Even us lowlike dock know that they should have rebranded one way or another. Not yrc (what a dumb ass name anyway) . They had two to choose from. And we still see both.
Yellow tractors and Roadway trailers. And vice versa. 10 years and it's still like this.
You did the right thing. Leaving when you did. It's an embarament to say I worked for them. At least the ten years.
I know a few who are your age when you left and have well over thirty years and are stuck. Too young to go. And no where to go if they did. One needs insurance for his wife's cancer. He's stuck and hates it but endures the situation for his wife.
One other I know is in the same situation. 68 years old less than 30 years. But collecting all benefits and was going to retire but his wife came down with cancer the same month he was to retire. She is ok now. But won't be declared free of it for five years. He will be 73 when he leaves.
I took the cuts and the chance. There is life after yrc. Just have to have balls to do it if you have the time and age. It's not an easy decision. But I've had harder ones. I've never been happier to be old enough. Lol.
Things happen in life that aren't pleasant. That's what some are afraid of. Something happening if they retire. If something does happen to one of us now that I have. We will deal with whatever is dealt. The days move on with or without us.
You did the right thing mud. Had I the time I would have left then too. And not let my mind be poisoned any longer with the pettiness and bs that goes with the place day to day.
I wish the best to the New Penn office people.
This may be a blessing in disguise.
I would hope they use it to their advantage.

3 Good companies down the drain, if it wasn’t for the banks Yellow would of been long gone the other 3 companies would be business as usual making UPS pay and retirement.
Those three weren’t making UPS pay and retirement before, why would they be now? My Local 135 Prez said Roadway was in the same shape as Yellow when they were bought.

Hey this sounds like roadway trucking boards not yrc you people are pathetic chronic cry babies
I resigned Yellow, in 2009, rather than work for Roadway Management.

I’m guessing it depends where you are. In Indy, Yellow had 3 managers per shift for a 180 door dock. They’d give you a stack of jobs and say come see us when you’re done. That’s my style. In Indy, Roadway had a Manager for every 5-6 doors, and loved to write letters. That’s not my style, so I left.

I have always respected your thoughts and perspective on Roadway and then YRC. The cultures of the two organizations, unsurprisingly, proved to be incompatible. Which has been at the root of the resentment of what was, arguably, once the best workforce in LTL. The same can be said of New Penn which suffered from the amalgamation of senior YRCF management, who to this day have never developed a viable business model or vision of what to do. To sustain the efficiencies, that were the hallmark of New Penn and Holland. I am glad you have been able to escape the asylum. You have my best wishes for a long, healthy retirement.

I may and think I may be a bit naive. At times.
I take a person at his word. And even a company. That's the naive part.
Thing is I have always tried. Tried. To be honest and truthful. Of course we trip up at times in our lives.
But when I say that I expect the same in return and that's where I stumble because I trusted too many people to be the same.
When I speak here. And I'm sure alot is just rambling But it's what I do best. My mind (brain) has been burnt form work.
I do enjoy reading some of the threads that can go into detail.
Numbers. People. Chronological order of things.. I've never been any good at that. I was good at one thing for a long time. I could see the wrong being done and the just common sense not there. One thing I have always had and that is what has made me successful to this point.
As for smart. My wife says I am. But I don't believe her. She is smart and can keep track of stuff. Without writing it down. Opposites attract I tell her. I see the difference between smart and common sense. And then just indifference. (yrc). That's why they will never be successful. They try. But never stick to it. And if they want to be successful they need a workforce that is successful. (not more customers they have enough now to be successful) When you said respect I thought that's what the workforce needs too. They try that too but it never sticks
But if they would just realize that most would work just that much harder to make them successful. It's funny but sad. They need to do just one simple thing and they will never do it. The workers are the most important part. Even the most hardcore will put in just that little umpff along with 25000 others to get em over the hump. But they fight us over a few pennies and a pension. People will work and work hard for that. We did. But when it's gone what's the point?
Thanks. I just said some of the things I've always wanted to but didn't because offending people really is not my intention. Never is. Never was. But it doesn't matter now. Still no offense is meant.
(I'm gone from there now. But it's still fresh. Soon it will just be a distant memory. I'm workin on that.)

Thank you.

Do you supposed there are a lot of resumes being put on monster.com in Grand Rapids right about now?
If I were them I would be.....a big wake up with what they did with new Penn s Corp office. All the rumours starting with merging closing ,cohabation of terms it looks great for the shippers when they see this ::shit:: and here about it from the competitors.Another great move by Yrc.
