SAIA | Working For Saia

I guess the Greenville / Spartanburg area is run out of the terminal in Greer, SC. Google map the area and that is one pretty place and it is a smaller terminal. I've been doing linehaul, for over 2 decades, and I believe that smaller terminals are run less strictly and more personably than the larger terminals. I would rather work in a smaller terminal.

Saia has their rules and some seem petty , to me, but it's their house and their paycheck. You go to work, mind your own business, do your assignments safely, accurately, timely, and don't be a freaking boy scout or super trucker. Go to work, do your job, and then get the hell out of the way. you can make a nice living and build a retirement pot off of Saia.

If there is a Linehaul opening and you can get it, I would advise you to do so. If the opening is for a system driver, let's talk.
Thanks for response. I’m still discerning what I should Concerning possibly making a switch. Can you give me a little insight about Saia’s transfer policy. If you transfer to a different Service center, will you lose your board seniority, or keep it?

must be employed 90 days minimum and I would imagine most LTL's work the same with regard to board seniority, u transfer, u go to the bottom otherwise you won't be making new friends anytime soon at your new center :lmao:

You get hired and want to transfer to a different terminal. You have to wait 90 days before you can submit a transfer request. There has to be an opening at the new terminal but you can check availability online. Your current TM has to approve the request, which he may turn down, for any number of reasons. If your current TM approves the transfer, then he sends the request to the TM of the new terminal. If everything lines up, your transfer is approved, and, if you are transferring into the same department, linehaul for linehaul, for example, then your seniority, your date of hire into linehaul, moves with you. This can be significant and a problem with the loca linehaul drivers, at your new terminal. Terminals are supposed to rebid the runs , at least once per year. A transfer comes in with more seniority and breaks into line may cause some friction with the locals but that is how I read the Saia transfer policy. If you are moving from linehaul to city, then your new seniority, in the city department, starts over with your first day.

Fair enough, but policy is policy.

Fair enough. If Saia’s policy is that your seniority follows you with a lateral move, than it shouldn’t be personal. It is what it is.

Whether or not that policy is enforced/followed is a roll of the dice. Honestly, there are too many policies that may or may not be enforced for any number of reasons.

It’s the buddy system here. Favoritism runs rampant here. If you’re liked they will look the other way. If you’re not then you’re history. No accountability in management here. It’s the price you pay for being non-union and being “hired at will.” I equate it to selling your soul to the devil. The pay is good but it doesn’t come without consequences.

That happened in Indy, a linehaul driver transfered his 20+ years into there and knocked everybody down a notch. People there are cordial with him, but they cant stand his *** lol. At least it's a proof of concept for people who are thinking of transferring.

yea, don't seem too fair and balanced to me. If you live in a desirable location, it must be difficult to move up the board in seniority

Ain’t sure I could hold that against somebody. Now, somebody at the bottom of the list snappin up all the weekend linehaul runs cuz he knows whose dick to suck, that’s a feller I’ll learn to hate real fast.

Coming in late with a different topic... What Saias extra board like?
Saia doesn't have an extra board. There are only two types of Linehaul spots, regular bid run and system. Bid is a regularly scheduled run, usually Mon/Fri, and system is whatever and wherever Dispatch needs the driver to go. System, usually leaves on Monday night, and may or may not stay out all week. Rarely do the system guys, at my barn, get cut.

Thanks .sounds like what we call extra board. Stay out all week and go where needed..

To each his own, but I would rather take a whippin then stay in a hotel. I like being at home but that's just me.
Dracula, or any Saia driver for that matter. Do you have any info on the Knoxville terminal? Good, bad, or indifferent? I am wanting to move to the Knoxville area as soon as I can. It looks like they have a Linehaul spot open right now. My current company doesn't/won't have any road spots open until next year at the earliest.

Thanks in advance!
