I have thought about getting into the powered paragliders. Looks interesting. And takes minimal training. They do dedicated classes over 4 day weekends. Just don't have that kinda money to spend right now.

Debating between buying a hot rod or getting my pilots license .
Only ever wanted to be two things besides a father and a husband (26 years married and 4 great kids currently 11, 13, 17, 21 so I can check those boxes) and that was a truck driver and a pilot. So one of those down, getting to the point of having some extra income and around me pilot training for single engine private pilot is 10-15 grand , all in. That would get me a nice little T-bucket or model A. So the debate starts ; hot rod/pilot

You buy the hotrod and pilot it around town problem solved
 
I am interested in PPG. Powered paragliding. Looks like there are courses where you can learn the basics in a week. Don't need any actual license. And if something goes wrong. You've already got your parachute deployed. Just float on down.
 
I've been talking to some pilots and people in the aviation sector, I have 1 small airport in my area and two farmers that have planes and grass strips on their farm. I have a very rural area. They've said their are some planes that don't require a full blown license that have come into play in the last decade, a result of some manufacturers trying to get people more involved in recreational aviation . I've not had time to check into it very much. The PPG you reference is the guys I see with the rectangular parachute and a fan on their back?

Yeah. Fan driven. They got videos on YouTube. Old farts getting into it. They have little carts you can sit in so that you don't have to do all that running to get going too. And I have seen some of the small personal aircraft. Single seat with a limited fuel supply and you are under the restrictions for needing a license. But a small plane still needs to be stored somehow. Where the paraglider is easier to handle. Would take up less room in the garage.
 
Hot rods are cool and can take you a few miles down the road, But a mile of runway can take you everywhere :) Check out Light Sport Aviation ( LSA )
20 hours of training and you can fly a few of the standard category airplanes like my Piper Cub or , Aeronca Champ and Chief , Taylorcraft , Ercoupe , Luscomb etc.... These are some very fun airplanes and pretty cheap to operate.
Also there are new LSA planes but they are very expensive. Check out some local fly in breakfast or small airshow.
I just retired from working on airplanes and got a house and hangar on a grass strip and love it.
Still looking for a old car to mess around with

Get your pilots license. Its an amazing accomplishment, sport or private. you will always have it, unless you do something stupid. For Sport, If you use a CFI and not a SCFI you can easily upgrade to a private pilot later on. You can stop flying for 10 years, take couple/few/several hours of training and get a flight review and your back in the air. You can buy a t-bucket later.

More than likely it will take close to 20 to just to solo. For a little more time and money you can get Private pilot, but will need a medical, similar to DOT physical. Just be careful with FAA medicals, if you are denied or defer'ed, it is not good for you.

Unless you are going to own, Sport pilot may have trouble finding LSA to rent.
 
Ive done enough in small planes to know with my hands I do not do well. If you made them say 50 ton sure you bet.

Hand me maps and radio stack for everything on the right side and I am content to keep us from getting lost the hardway. (Camp David exclusion zone among other things in them days long before 9-11.) Ive plenty of time and thought about getting back into the air once the finances improve. But eh.. we'll see how that goes. If you see a pluff of dust and a crater after. Thats me. Id be wearing wings and a halo then.
