There’s exciting news regarding legislation designed to address severely underfunded multiemployer pension plans and secure benefits for retirees. H.R 397, the Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act (better known as the Butch Lewis Act) is being reviewed and voted on in the Ways andMeans Committee on Wed July 10th at 10:00 a.m. If the bill is voted out of the Committee, it will be primed to move on to the Floor for a full vote in the House of Representatives.

We urge you to write to your House members to tell them to support the bill. Also, check to see if your member of Congress. If so, tell him or her that the multiemployer crisis needs to be fixed now, and urge him or her to co-sponsor H.R. 397, which provides a comprehensive solution to the insolvency problem afflicting 130 or more plans and affecting as many as 1.5 million workers and retirees.

Be sure to tell your representative how your multiemployer plan has been affected. Also tell him or her whether your benefits have already been cut or if you expect them to be cut.

We must all take immediate action to demand that hard-earned pension benefits be protected!

Thank you,

Emily Gilbert

So give up more money from pay check to put into a a broken pension system, ...yeah ok.
Only a MEASTER would say something like that. So I guess my 30+ years of service means nothing? And to top that off I can't believe the idiots that voted for this new contract with no contributions to the pension. The company bought you guys out for $4. So the hell with all of us retirees. I hope ALL of you suck it when time comes for you to retire.

Your retirement should have been funded with money put in while you worked. So you’re saying we should put into a broken pension fund so you get a pension and we the workers still working get screwed? That’s how it comes out to people in a devastated pension fund like Cspf. Maybe YOU shouldn’t be such a measter!

CSPF has about 12.5 billion, and 410,000 Teamsters. It would require more than 30 billion to break even. So flattop is right. The Fund is broken and never will meet demands, no matter how much YRCW puts in... the Treasury Dept already said cuts cant save it.

Yeah , I'm a measter.30 years of contribution to C. S. . 55 years old will never collect a dime , unless the impossible happens in Congress. How long you been collecting? If you've collected 1 pension check , your slot further ahead than this measter will ever be.

Talk about a measter, I've served more than thirty years. We need to get the Trump Chumps in this union backing pro-labor candidates to have a snowballs chance in hell of saving this thing.

I was a Teamster for 41 years before I retired. I had 9 carriers fold while I was employed with them,....or, at least,..as long as I was employed, prior to layoff.
Each one of those carriers had paid the appropriate amounts into the funds while I was on their seniority list.......Why am I called an..."orphan"?
(...I spent 24 years with ABF, by the way...).

But,...if the carriers had paid into the funds prior to their closure,....and, say,....if you hadn't worked for another Teamster company after your carrier closed,...
....then your pension benefit would be based on....when you left the Union.....

If you were vested,.....then you are owed the.....deferred wages that were paid on your behalf into the pension fund.

All of us need to stress this to our Legislative Representatives......We aren't asking for a "gift"........like getting grants for soybeans I can't sell to China...
We are asking for a long-term loan program,.......to restore wages deferred into pension plans.....

Social Security is similar to a defined-benefit plan.......Your wages are deferred into the Social Security Trust Fund,....on the promise that,...after a certain amount of years,.....you can "regain" those wages deferred.

Many people would be upset if their S.S. was cut......mainly because you actually see,..on a weekly basis,...just how much wages are....deferred. The pension funds should've issued a....."weekly statement", too......saying how much negotiated "wages" were deferred to the Fund. The "anger" level would be a lot higher.....

...(....Wait a second! As a Union steward, I was given a monthly statement to post in the Union bulletin board,...showing a receipt saying how much money went to the pension fund. MY terminal knew what wages were...deferred...to the pension fund.....)

How many other terminals do NOT post the monthly pension...(..and H & W ) payments?....due to...laziness or ignorance?....
It is CONTRACTUAL that the company provide the Union those monthly receipts. I had some "battles" with the Labor man about timely issues of those receipts......And, he agreed with me......

Way back about 10 years ago,....in the Joint Council #40 area,......the Western Pennsylvania Pension Fund.......THREW YRC out of the Fund,....for FAILURE to pay pension contributions ....for FIVE months....
(...One of TWO Strikeable offenses in the contract.......failure to pay H & W, or pension payments ....for ONE month...)

My question has always been......"Why did no....Committeeman, no Assistant Steward, no Steward, no Business Agent, or no Union President....notice,...for FIVE months....there were NO pension payments made,....
.....ESPECIALLY when this is a Strikeable Offense after ONE month,.....AND the companies involved,...(YRC, Roadway, Holland, and New Penn..)....were CONTRACTUALLY REQUIRED to provide a Monthly Statement saying they HAD paid into the Fund?

That's a Helluva Lotta Stewards, B.A's and Local Presidents.........And, NO ONE noticed for.....FIVE months?

Any of you guys who are Stewards,......It is ....CRITICAL.....that you post those Monthly Statements......They are your First Indication that....something's amiss.

Imagine how much better shape the Western Pennsylvania Pension Fund would be in,.....if just ONE YRC/Roadway/Holland/New Penn Steward would've put up a fuss,.....after just ONE MONTH of non=payment,.......Threatened a Strike?

I'm not saying there's a....."conspiracy".....I just think YRC took advantage of....."laziness"..on the rank-and-file's part,...to check those payments.....

When I brought this issue up,...way back about 10 years ago,....at Local #30's Monthly Meeting,.....I was told "not to worry about it",.......because, at that time, YRC had just moved it's last terminal out of Local #30's jurisdiction,..into another Local's (#249) area.....and therefore it was not Local #30's...."problem"....

In Hindsight,....it was,...and is,......ALL of our problems,.........

In 2009, YRCW (symbolicly) was standing in a swimming pool full of sewage up to their nostrils. No Union Pension was going to drop a boulder into that pool and drown all hope. We knew since the 1990s Pensions were doomed.

In the early 1990's, Central Pennsylvania..(.Local #776 in Harrisburg..) switched to a defined-contribution style fund,...based on (..in hindsight..)..unrealistic rates of return.....
In 2004, I believe,....they switched back to a defined-benefit fund.....Cumbersome,..but doable...

You mean to say that it was....common knowledge...that CSPF was "doomed"...since the '90's,.....and yet no one tried to....change,..or do anything about it? Other pension plans did.......

Western Penna. was ...flush with cash, issuing 13th checks to retirees until 2003,...Still solvent until about 2006,....Trustees came up with a plan to stabilize after Hostess bankruptcy cheated fund out of millions......

And then the Crash of 2008.........

But, until then,...our Trustees were actively working to keep the Plan viable with various options.......

Surely the Trustees of CSPF didn't stand there like the Captain of the Titanic,...watching the "iceberg" approach for years,....and did nothing?

How long was YRCW "standing in the sewage pool"? Years? Decades?......And no one voted out the Trustees? Why wasn't there insurrection amongst YRCW employees? The main reason I worked a Union job,....was the pension. If I saw a....festering problem threatening my pension for......years?.....decades?......

.....I know I would've done......something.....

That's a whole decade,....from 1999 to 2009.....

I started with Yellow in 2001. The pension fund was in serious trouble then. The manager in KC flat out told all of us to start a 401k on our own because of the pension being so screwed up. Guess he was correct.

In spite of your War and Peace long question, the answer is- yes, they knew

What happens when the government takes your 401k like in Argentina and a few European countries don't tell me it can't happen here?
