FedEx Freight | Smoking In The Trucks

According to FMCSA, it depends on the placards... Of course FedEx policy is no smoking in the cab, period.

§397.13 Smoking.
No person may smoke or carry a lighted cigarette, cigar, or pipe on or within 25 feet of—

(a) A motor vehicle which contains Class 1 materials, Class 5 materials, or flammable materials classified as Division 2.1, Class 3, Divisions 4.1 and 4.2; or

(b) An empty tank motor vehicle which has been used to transport Class 3, flammable materials, or Division 2.1 flammable gases, which when so used, was required to be marked or placarded in accordance with the rules in §177.823 of this title.
Fascinating. But the important statement was Fedex has a no smoking policy in the tractors. And smoking is allowed only in designated areas on the property. You should see the cigarette butts all over our yard.

Third hand smoke is gaining some attention also. It’s amazing we have a city driver that smells like a dogs ass from smoke. Totally clueless about the stench customers have already requested not to send her to their location.

Be careful...if we’re going to do down this road then we can’t cherry pick which policies/guidelines we want them to enforce, there’s also a no cell phone/Bluetooth policy, a no eating or drinking while driving policy, no use of electronic devices while driving policy, etc...

Absolutely agree that’s what breaks are for. Nothing worse than getting in a tractor that has stench in it from a driver before that has smoke smell on his clothes and a bag of trash with left over food.

Sweet I can leave the electronic handheld device in the trailer until my next stop.

What if it’s the rear pup? Technically your more than 25 feet away. Thought of that after reading these posts....The other night I saw a guy hauling a fuel tanker throw a cigarette out the window. Now that’s plain stupid.
A gas tanker driver told me their boss has a hand held meter that can detect if smoking was going on in the cab
