FedEx Freight | Fedex Vs Saia

U dont get paid for your drop and hooks at saia at fedex your get 30 min for drop 30 min for hook and 15 min for fuel ...trust me it adds up
Big Daddy is right, it does add up but he is wrong, with respect, to drop and hook pay. Saia doesn't pay refueling time, per se, it's just understood that refueling is part of your drop n hook time and generally you will only fuel once a night, whereas, you may have no drops or multiple drops per night. Saia pays LH, by the mile, but, for LH drop n Hooks, a hourly rate of about $27 is used, for the drop n hook calculation. Every drop n hook is worth about $13. Some runs may have dock time or scheduled stop and terminal work off. Those times are paid, at the regular LH hourly rate.

There is no allegedly about it, those inward cameras do have audio. However, if the no CB policy and no phone policy is not a personal issue, then you learn to drive/ live , with the camera. I don't like it but I have learned to live with it.
The vacation schedule, fidelity 401-k / with match, after ten years company paid insurance for the employee and family, mostly brand new tractors and equipment, good breakdown infrastructure and on and on.

Saia is moving into the NE to stay and to grow, which means more regular runs. If you have the chance to walk into a regular run, I'd say take it. The earlier you start your seniority clock the more options you will have when the runs are rebid and they are supposed to be rebid ,at least once a year.

I can't speak for anyone else but I have been LH for over 20 years. It has provided a very nice blue collar lifestyle both for me and my family.

If they ever come to my area, I will probably jump this ship that always seems to be in uncertain waters called FedEx. Plus we have a declining benefit package, don't know how we plan on getting and keeping decent drivers in future. The drivers they have hired recently you can tell our standards are declining also.

I'm thinking about the same thing . They're in my area and hiring linehaul drivers. The grass isn't always greener, but after talking to some people it may be better to shoot my shot somewhere else. I know my hub has lost a good amount of talent to Saia and the ones I've kept in contact with are happy with their decision.

well, probably too soon to make a good assessment, but I’ve been here over a month and no complaints so far. I did leave my 3 weeks vacation behind so that kinda sucked

I'm sure it did. I pretty much have no seniority at the moment, that's why I'm thinking about it. The differences would be minimal because I'm still at the bottom. What is the 401K match and do you know how the employee stock purchase plan works?

ya know, they discussed that at orientation, but knowing I had to wait 90 days for the goodies, I just didn't pay too much attention

It does vary by location... I believe it’s 68cpm here. 2 weeks vacation after 1 year is pretty nice. Paid jury duty for as many days as it takes. (I was out 8 days on a long trial) Many these days eliminated that. Fully paid for two days for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Some pay just for one. 5 personal days after 1 year is pretty sweet too. $12.weekly for healthcare if you’re single. $37.weekly for the family. $25.copays for office visits $35.for specialist without meeting deductible. $1500 deductible. I can’t remember the max out of pocket but it’s not that much considering. The sign on bonus varies too depending on location.. some places are 5K .... This company has a great compensation package but the cameras are the downside. They can be petty but it takes a lot to be fired. You get one time on the handheld and you’re gone the next time. Other than that they just won’t fire you unless you keep doing the same thing over and over.

Well, that’s certainly light years better than our medical insurance.

I'll keep you all posted how many from my barn go over to SAIA.

Don't have any yet.

Guys, seriously I wouldn’t give up what you have to go to SAIA unless you have very little seniority. I can’t say why some jumped ship but in my opinion FedEx is a great company. All these LTL companies chew you up and spit you out without a second thought. They wouldn’t miss a beat without any of you so don’t be blinded into thinking your special. After 45 years in LTL I can say I’m truly blessed to come out of this industry with my health intact. LTL isn’t for everyone and it can be hard on your body so take care of yourself both mentally and physically. It’s good money for a blue collar worker but my suggestion is always know your place. And let your loyalty stay with your family. This is just your job. Never lose sight of that fact and you’ll be OK. LTL is a cut throat business and they take no prisoners. Don’t let your loyalty be misguided.:1036316054:

Pretty sure those 5 personal days start in January for everyone

I get that, but the direction FedEx is going in has me and a lot of others concerned. The raise was an insult to the people that were waiting for it and within the same month make our insurance more expensive with less coverage. If they cared at all they would have spaced out those announcements. At our center the insurance changes and the raise were covered in the same meeting. Imagine the morale coming out of that room.

That being said, I don't expect great treatment at SAIA. I don't expect it from anywhere these days, but that insurance plan and 401k match is very enticing. Especially to someone like me. Younger than most of the guys with a young family. I don't care about the camera and I have no seniority to worry about.

The only thing that worries about me about SAIA is the favoritism that's smeared allover that thread and on employee reviews online. Say what you will about FedEx, they respect the seniority rules. I'm not a people person and I'm not good at politics. That's why I like trucks.
