To wish a Happy Veteran's Day is traditional,....but it doesn't sound solemn enough to go with the reality of what it takes to be a Combat Veteran,....

I'm not,......I served all my time in the States,.....goofing off and always under the threat; "Screw up one more time, Airman,...and we're reassigning you to the USAF Red Horse team"..training on our base in the Florida panhandle....Air Force's version of the SeaBees,.....Where they push a bulldozer out of a plane,...and push you out behind it........

Never...screwed up enough,...to get there......But I remember the POW's flying into our base,....

All you guys who were Combat Veterans.....have my deep respect.

And have a Quiet Veteran's Day........

I had a friend over there who habitually missed stateside reserve meetings. You guessed it, he was activated with just a year left. When he got back to the states his obligation was complete. He had a nickname 'Puttin time'. When he was asked just about any question he said I don't know or care, I'm just 'puttin in time'. He said there is nothing more they can do to me now.

For about 10 years after my discharge,...I really didn't say too much about being a Veteran,......Wasn't a big deal way back in the late '70's.......
But my Dad had grabbed me when I got out,...and had me join the American Legion,....His same Post.

In the late '90's, I became a little more active,..helping out with the Color Guard during parades and such...44 years in the Legion.

And I'm a better Legionnaire than I was a soldier.......

I was encouraged to become a lifetime member of the VFW by a local post member 40 years ago. He was a veteran of 3 wars. He was quite a character who lived past 100. He was in the military at different times in his life. He joined the Merchant Marines so he could go to Vietnam. He was featured several times in local & state newspapers. When asked why he wanted to go to Vietnam he said, he was taking our draft dodging governor & later president's place.
