If someone were to call off the day before a holiday and use personal time to keep the absence from being counted, do they still lose holiday pay since it’s not considered an absence?

If not, I’m never working the day before Thanksgiving again.

Hourly and staff non-exempt employees must work the scheduled work shift immediately preceding and following the holiday to receive holiday pay. Exceptions will be made when:

Manager approves employee being absent
Employee is on vacation or a preappproved personal day
Employees normal day off is the day before or after the holiday
Employee has been suspended or placed on driver stand down the day before or after the holiday.
An employee who is injured on the job during the week in which a holiday occurs and is unable to work the day before or after the holiday.

Whoooooooo

I put in for the Friday before Memorial Day off this year and was denied. There was only 2 people off that day, every other Friday had 4 people off. I asked TM why only 2 people off that Friday? Was told that he decides how many people to let off any given day and if he has to be here so does everyone else. So I called in on the Thursday before Memorial Day (because 2 for 1) then I called in on Friday. TM gets on the phone and tells me that if I don’t work tonight I won’t get my holiday pay. I responded,” well I’m already not getting paid for yesterday and today since I called off so 1 more day ain’t going to break me.” TM tells me,”if one more day won’t break then go ahead and take the whole week, you’re suspended.” I say,” ok text me that and I will see u next Monday.” He never texted me so I texted him. Am I suspended? No answer. Called HR told them what happened and next thing I know I get a text from TM telling me to be at work on Tuesday after Memorial Day. Didn’t get my holiday pay, but was the best 5 days on the lake I have ever had.

My area is expecting a pretty gnarly snow storm. About 10 inches deep (giggity). My dock supervisor just texted me to come in at 2pm to get ahead of the storm. The storm has already started and it's only noon. There are reports of accidents in my area due to the weather because of the hills around here.

I had planned to just leave now and hang out in the parking lot until 2, but I don't want to get into accident and I don't want to get stuck.

If this were a regular day, I would just take the attendance hit, but i don't want to lose my holiday pay. Honestly, I can't afford to.

Is there a way i can sit this out and still get my holiday pay? Would this be a back and forth with hr or would the hub handle it?

My bet would be that BOTH policies will apply.

1) You don't have to drive, if you feel it's unsafe. No points/corrective action of any kind.

2) If you don't work (except if planned/approved), the day before and after, you won't get paid. Company convenience (overstaffed) exception being left up to center discretion.

Might not be the answer you were looking for, but I think that's how it will play out. Sorry...

I figured as much. I sucked it up and went in for 6 hours. The drive there wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, the drive home was pretty bad. I made it home incident free and I've secured my holiday pay. We'll see how the rest of this storm plays out.

You guys realize they confirm KRONOS and pay on Sunday, so how would they take away your holiday pay if it has already been turned in? Just saying.

We have had many drivers call off for bad weather. If several do from the same area sometimes they will excuse them. If everyone else shows up but just a couple call off due to weather then they don't excuse them.
