are any terminals being shuttered in 2020 ? Any new planned "remote dispatch" operations?

Seems like we are headed that way... I will retire in 2020, so it really won't affect me that much other than the stock price...which might actually rise once ArcBest rids itself of the rif-raf (that's us Teamster employees !)...so, what do you think.

A side note: I know that Bubba Gump was banned (Hello, Bubba!, I know you still read, but what happened to MULER "YOUR BROTHER ALWAYS!" I miss his posts and insights..

I think Muler retired, too. His picture was in the ABF paper for something several months ago. Safety award I think. Good man....

Didn’t hear anything about consolidations but I did hear today about a new sales structure they are implementing very soon.... Supposed to have meetings with the employees to inform us about it.....I asked the salesman today if he heard that Celadon went bankrupt he said no, then he turned to the TM & asked him....I think we all know what his answer was.

oh no! A new sales structure? Now, that is a new one (just kidding)..same ole, same ole...I guess they will sell for ArcBest/PANTHER/truck loads, etc--everything except good ole ABF

Do the math....

240 Terminals
About 20,000 shipments per day (and shrinking)
83 shipments O/B shipments per day per terminal.

How can they keep so many open?
The key to profitably in trucking is Freight Density and Lane Balance. they don't have either.

Because they try to hard to grow non asset & less time with the golden egg (freight). Look at the stock price, the shareholders are not fooled by the people running this company & the direction it’s heading....

To my knowledge the ill fated attempt by Roy Slagle to shut down the Little Rock terminal & move operations to Memphis is over. There have been no posts on the 'Keep on trucking' site about 'Team Little Rock Memphis' in several years.

83 shipments per day? Is that locally controlled freight and/or national account business...man, if that is so, yikes!

Here is the math:
20,027 Shipments Per Day (source: ARCB 3rd Quarter Filing)
240 Terminals
83 average shipments per day, which means they have a handful terminals doing much more than that (Chicago, Dayton, ATL etc) and they have many smaller terminals doing less than 83 which means lots of re-handle cost and extra LH costs.
Don't know the mix of their National/Local/3PL, but you cant shrink your way to profitability! Consolidation is inevitable!

Good Point!

We had 23 outbound bills Friday & 34 yesterday, we have a 40 door terminal with 18 on the list. 4 different salespeople in 5 years everyone of them was green & Tm has account that he never goes to & the salesperson can’t call on any of those accounts. How is their no accountability whatsoever? Thank god we have heavy inbound or this place would really be hurting. Me & a few others have been complaining about the same issue’s on here for years & nothing ever gets looked into. Maybe this is the reason very few take the company survey....

Before I retired we had a 12 man board....now they're down to 7....and one more retiring soon.
Barely enough freight to keep everyone busy.......
There are accounts that told me before I retired that they hadn't seen a salesman in more than a year.

Cameras in trucks? How about cameras on the sales staff.....? You know......the ones with the open expense accounts, company reimbursements and hour-and-a-half lunches......

I'll bet if they ever videotaped the antics of some of the sales staff in the unproductive terminals........they'd see where the profits are going.

Why waste money on cameras to film guys who have to log any duty change.....
.......when you have people on the payroll who haven't even begun to justify a paycheck?

No accountability at all!! They know how many stop per hour & how many bills moved on the dock per hour or when were moving or stopped & our location at any given time. You are right Canary their focus is on the wrong things....

Heck, canary...you and I are ABF retirees, along with a bunch of other guys on here. Maybe we should take up that cause! I’d love nothing more than to follow my old TM around for several days, incognito, and see exactly what he DOESN’T do all day. Talking to some of the guys, it sure as hell isn’t getting new accounts!!

I'll have to break out my disguises,.........And bring my pillow and alarm clock.........

I would take the survey if my thin skinned manager would let us. He just pulled a good one last week......A driver was on vacation so we had one extra truck...he had two trucks that needed to go in the shop.... he forgot (he does that a lot, too busy playing games on his phone) to call the vendor for repairs, Guy comes back monday, trucks really need service now, has to rent two trucks..... no accountability, but hey we got these nifty cameras that's all that matters....lmao

did you see on the R&L TB page where they had a record 55K shipments last Friday...and we have had over 800 views on this topic that I started? wow, lots of folks in the GO look at this...How about it--Judy, Tim, Bubba Gump (I know you still read), Roy Slagle, etc..wow, we are sucking wind!
