I applied for this job today, and wanted to ask if anyone has information on the job title itself as well as the terminal. I doubt I'll get the job, since I've been Solo for about 10 months at Schneider but figured why not throw an application out there and see what happens. I have all my endorsements, currently waiting on my background check for my Hazmat (already passed the test portion). Thank you to any replies in advance.

Combo driver in LTL is speak is someone that works the dock and drives. How much driving/dockwork depends on the company and specific location. I work for another LTL outfit but in my opinion LTL is where it's at in terms of trucking jobs. The other two terms are city/P&D and linehaul. Linehaul means terminal to terminal or meet point. City/P&D is multiple stops and generally 0700-2200 for most companies. Only LTL I'd be wary of is Central. I'll step aside and let others post on specifics, but I hope this helped a little. Good Luck and hopefully welcome to LTL Life.

Thanks for the info, I hope to break into LTL at some point soon... Just have to stay patient and hopefully a good opportunity will present itself in my area.

I have been a Combo for Big E over Five years. I like it, I chose to stay in Combo category because I like filling in on Hub runs
And have a change of pace from P&D. There is some Dock work involved, but it's not to bad. You will like Working here if you get the job. Lots of changes last couple of years
Technology is ever changing the way we do things. That's about everywhere you go these days. Good luck!!

So I am just wondering how it works for you. They call you daily or weekly with your assignment? If your high on combo seniority do you ever have options between what you want to do for the week? I'm just curious as Estes is one of the few LTL's that still uses the combo position to hire on.

I have to be Pro Active in checking the vacation schedule . T Sometimes it's spuratic , If someone calls in sick. This week Working Nights first part of the week , P& D last couple of days. How it works on Combo is ask from top down and force from bottom up. Most of the Combo drivers at our barn does not like running nights, like I do.

It varies from terminal to terminal. You are subject to do anything at anytime. I talked to a Charlotte combo guy a while back that had gone to Salt Lake City to help our for a few weeks.
