Can someone tell me about the life at the china grove terminal. I currently work for another LTL Carrier. I would like to know some info here about R&L linehaul life.
What is the starting pay and top for the china grove area?
Are you home daily or do you guys stay out a week at a time?
Extraboard?
Vacation time?
Do you get paid for breaking and hooking sets?
Bid runs?
Assigned trucks?
Benefits?
401k matching point?
I have Hazmat,tanker,doubles/triples endorsements. 5 yrs driving no violations and no accidents.

Just trying to find out some info?
Thanks

I'm a city driver now but ran linehaul but not out of China Grove. I have a thread entitled Some Linehaul Rates on this forum that can give you some General ideas about linehaul. I will answer some of the basics then hopefully a China Grove guy will chime in. Our linehaul is lifetime bids. They pay flat rate per run,(this is where the other thread I mentioned is relevant) no extra pay for fueling or breaking a set. Most linehaul guys will share a tractor with a city guy, if you're lucky you're both assigned to the truck so it's not a different guy everyday in your truck. Our equipment is good.

401K martches first 3%. Two weeks vacation upon completion of first year, 3 personal days. Theee weeks at 10, 4 at 15.
All our linehaul is out and back unless you sign up to be a team or a system driver, not many system drivers as far as I know. You will either go to another terminal or meet a switch driver at a predetermined point. No overnight unless it's weather related. Our extraboard is called floating. You will float by seniority until you get a bid which only opens when someone retires, leaves, or they add lanes to a terminal. Trucks are mostly Peterbilts with 12 speed auto shifts. We are governed at 68 and the trucks have adaptive cruise and Bendix wingman system for the Nanny state. We have LYTX cameras that are forward facing only unless you get enough warnings they will turn on driver facing. Driver facing camera is physically blocked by the cover unless they switch it because if warnings. Most trucks are assigned but there is a No Truck Shuffle at some barns .

Pups vs Long box on linehaul is 50/50 for a floater. Some runs get long box every night, some get twins and some get a mix. So if you did get a bid you might do exclusively one or the other but as a floater your going to see both. They've purchased a lot of new pups and dollies and they are pretty easy to move around. R&L is good about safety. I've never been hassled when I've brought up legitimate safety issues. If you're a prima Donna or a whiner you may have trouble. The linehaul rates overall are not great compared to other LTL's but the environment is laid back. Mind you, there are some really good paying runs as well. We've a couple out of my barn that are a tad over 100,000 per year, all legal , all on ELD of course. We run Samsung tablets in the trucks for logs.

They do have some nice resorts you can use free of charge as well. They're a good company overall, I've been here 10 years but have been around LTL a long time. You might find more money elsewhere, but if you want to come in, do your job, go home and get paid, this is a good place to do it. Of course we have Drama Queens, but unless you insert yourself into it, it's not a big deal

Also, you start out at a percentage of the flat rates on linehaul, moved up a little each year till you top out which is three years. I know some barns have different rates and I heard a rumor some barns were bringing experienced LTL hands at a higher/quicker progression than the standard three years, but no concrete proof.

ALSO, you will NEVER ride a forklift in Linehaul. All you do is dive the truck, no dockwork ever unless you hired in as a combo guy.

The Vacation is actually 1 week upon completion of your first year, you get 2 weeks upon completion of your third year.

Looks like no one from China Grove is on here or doesn't care to share. As I said, we are a pretty laid back company, if you are in that neighborhood try to catch one of our city guys or just stop in at the terminal. Don't know who's TM down there and you wouldn't necessarily need to talk to TM. Assistant TM or operations manager should have a good grip on things.

Fyi Estes,Old Dominion and I believe Saia all top out at .70 cpm plus fuel and drop/hook pay. Not sure if any of those companies are near you but do your homework.
I make as much or more here than I did at Estes (7 years at Estes) I had a 630 mile bid run. Also Estes doesn’t pay fueling you get paid 1/4 hr per drop hook. Our drop hook pay is built into run. The thing here is we have quite a few shorter mike runs.

Do you run system or linehaul? If you were still at Estes your 630 mile run would pay about $437 @ .695 a mile. Our similar milage runs pay about $375-$388 range and if you take out our "built in" drop n hook pay our rate is even less.

System it would be closer to $400 here east coast about $397 for a straight hit. If it’s a meet or extra stop which is typical it’s closer to $430. Benefits are much cheaper here too. Estes micro manages considerably more as well.
Last I knew Estes solo rate for extra board is 66.5 cpm top. Or $419 for 630 miles.

Estes long runs are drying up as they do away with lay downs. Buddies still there explicitly told me not to come back it’s gone down hill. I’d your are not happy here go find some where you are happy.

Do you have a lot of solo system drivers in your area, crb? We had 1 guy try it at our barn, didn't like it and quit. About 1/2 our teams are bid dedicated runs and 1/2 system, they all seem relatively satisfied with money and schedules. I'm curious how many solo system drivers there are at R&L and how much money they make but no one around my barn seems to have an answer.

Extraboard top pay is .72 even now at E. I had a friend that worked at China Grove a while back that ran solo extraboard in a sleeper and he seemed to always be running some big miles and they always seemed way more organized than Estes and he never seemed to be sitting around waiting much. If RL had a terminal close to my residence I’d be inclined to give it a shot.
