SAIA | Say It Ain't So

Internationals have been and always will be the bottom of the barrel of trucking. 40 years ago they had cummins engines but, the doors fit poorly, the gauges, switches and relays broke. Nothing has changed since then. I came to work here because had Volvos. Now, we have this crap. Very disappointing.

When I first started, almost 15 years ago now, I chose Saia because they were the only company that wasn't running Internationals... I was disappointed when we bought them the first time but was able to avoid having to drive them, drank a beer when they said we were getting rid of them and when I saw one being transported (the genesis of this post) I about shed a tear... though that may have just been my back cringing up

My feelings exactly about a COE Freightliner with a Jiff.
Top of the list for misery.

What, breeze,You didn’t like getting those patten leather shoes ,Dirty:crybaby:. Or Jiff up :17:at end of line terminal on a Saturday or Sunday morning:duh:,Just to pull M/t’s:17142:.

I think you been reading my mail!
I'd like the man who invented a jiff, break out in little buttholes, have the drizzles every day of his life and live to be 146 yrs old.

My guess is that after the misfortunes with the Maxxforce engines, that International may have cut Saia a good deal on these tractors, it's a win win for both, International is selling trucks to them again and if anything Saia will be able to test the Cummins motors, not sure if ever if Saia has ran Cummins power, I am sure one of the veterans of the company can answer that, considering the fact that both Freightliner and Volvo offer Cummins as well, this could be a economical way for the company to gather performance and reliability data on the Cummins for future tractor purchases and a different engine option, just because they bought some more Internationals doesn't mean Saia will stick with them.

I've had a 2020 intl since before Thanksgiving. I didn't think I'd like it at first, but the seats aren't as bad as the 13's.... the biggest advantage is I don't have to worry about someone taking off with it LOL

P.S. They read speed limit signs, 5 over and you'll get alerts. It's not a perfect system though, as it'll sometimes pick up the yellow speed limit recommendation signs for off ramps or curves... so yeah, I've had it think I was doing 65 in a 25 before...

Do those alerts come from a system in the truck then, like Bendix? Hows the Cummins, good power, good pulling, are they the X15s.

As far as I know, the speed limit system is part of LDS (lane departure system). I only know that because when LDS fails, I don't get alerts for going above the speed limit or hitting the zipper/fog. If/when it triggers a lytx event for speeding, couldn't tell you.

They pull pretty well, assuming you are in clean air and don't have to get out of it before the grade.

We had Cummins power in some of the old west-ex trucks and possibly some of the used trucks that we bought back in 2010... But in think that the last new trucks we had bought with a Cummins motor was in the 2003... wait the new freightliner city trucks, albeit a small one, have them as well

Edit; forgot about the team trucks - the had them too

I remember that! I was at a different ltl carrier at the time, but yes I do remember West Ex becoming Saia, the blue Volvo's, are the 2010 used ones those Columbia's that are either white, black or yellow, there were a few when I started but now they are gone now, yeah we have one Freightliner city rig at our terminal.

My company has some new 2020 Peterbilts. Has a similar system. Red and blue lights blink above the sign on the dash. Our system also sends a pic of the sign with your actual speed to safety. We do not have the Lytex system. Just forward facing cams

Gotta love that, especially when ya get on the freeway from a 25 mph road and the stupid thing thinks yer goin 3 times the speed limit once ya sink spur.

The system we had at the last company I worked for would pick up the speed limit sign on a frontage road.
Ours will do that too, and the yellow exit signs if the sun hits em right. I even have issues with it readin the highway route signs, or just 2 digits on a 3 digit route if one of em is a zero or a five
