Walmart usually has a payphone by the main entrance, or in the customer service area. But now a days the payphones use a credit card only.
There are a few in this state that are still operational. One in the Fayetteville/Springdale area is a well preserved wooden booth that is on the historical register. There is one in this town on Highway 65 but it is not operational. Some I remember were well built from aluminum & plexiglass. They made a good shelter from the weather if you were broken down. The door had a switch that operated the fluorescent light when you closed the door.
A phone booth told me it was time to get glasses, I had to back out the door before I could see the numbers to dial.

I thought that when you put the receiver to your ear you heard the operator say "number please". What's this stuff about numbers and a "dial"? What does a bar of soap have to do with a telephone?

How? The number is on the back of the card !So if your credit card is stolen you can't even make the call to report it!
