TFI International bought UPS Freight with plans to make the LTL carrier “lean and mean,” a turn of phrase CEO Alain Bédard likes to use. While the company is implementing that strategy, including recent cuts to salespeople, one thing it needs more of is truck drivers.

We had people retire when we took over,” Bédard said after TFI reported second-quarter financial results. “You know, we had some people say, ‘You know what. This is not UPS. Who are these guys? I don’t want to know who are these guys.’ So they just retired. OK, so we’re going through that now.

Bédard expressed displeasure with the costs of the sales side of the business. He told analysts in July that TForce Freight had been spending $350,000 a month on sales.

“I fell off my chair when I learned that — impossible,” he said. “So we are now working with the team to address [it]. This is not normal, guys. I mean, what are we doing?”

My barn has/had 5-6 sales people. I barely ever saw them or know them.
We also lost a few to the ‘leaner meaner approach’ which meant customer reduction and less freight to pick up and senior drivers now wanting to go through the learning curve again and retiring.

Other ltls are starting dock workers $20 plus per hour and offering driver training programs . Tforce freight is asking dock hands to work part time at $13 an hour and train on their own time . If we offered a real dock worker wage and ability to help workers with the cdl process recruitment would be better . Also I would recruit former military personnel for help .

All the talk i hear everywhere, alot are waiting for next contract to see what happens if they trash our health care take the pension there will be another mass exit of people from what i hear. Most come for health care and pension .This place is still run by ups doesnt, its just a name change. All the same people in richmond former ups scumbags there and still in most of these terminals. Most people i talk to are unimpressed.

"the unionized driver positions include a slew of benefits, such as vacation — which can eventually hit five weeks — health insurance and a 401(k) plan".
Pension???

Bedard is clueless and the fact is Canadians have no experience on how to compete in the ruthless deregulated LTL marketplace here in the USA. He owns a couple of tiny broke dick LTL carriers in Canada, if he thinks that gives him the knowledge to run an almost 3 billion dollar union carrier in the thankless US market he is sorely mistaken. Fact is the folks running TForce Freight are the same as when it was UPS Freight and that is not good because most of these folks came from UPS Small Package. These folks are not experienced LTL operators, they are small package operators. You cannot manage and run an LTL carrier like a small package carrier. Why Bedard bought a union trucking company boggles the mind. He could have bought a PittOhio, AAA Cooper, R&L, Estes, SAIA, Dayton and on and on. Fact is he did it because he got it for a song and a dance. 880 million and then UPS gives back 453 million for paying off the current contracts pension and healthcare costs. The assets alone are worth the price he paid. Two years from now will be interesting gents, Bedard is a cost cutter and a cheap @ss without the deep pockets of the former owner. No doubt he will be looking to cut costs in the upcoming contract negotiations.

Hopefully the next contract can change that
Top pay don't mean ::shit:: if your pension and Healthcare is subpar.
For a union carrier tforce Healthcare and pension are crap.
You pay for health insurance each week, and there's a 1500 yearly out of pocket.
The pension pays 120ish a month per year of service.
Abf don't pay for health care, and only has a 15 dollar copay weather they go for a heart transplant or anything else, everything is 100% covered.
Their pension currently pays 180+ a month per year of service.
Their top rate is 26.20 right now.
Now tell me Witch would you rather have?
Alot of guys at tforce are hung up on the hourly rate and don't see the whole compensation package.
"get the big picture" can be used in more than just driving
I just used them as a example because I'm familiar with their compensation

ABF is in pretty deep financial trouble again and had it not been for the 700 million dollar gubbamint bailout of YRC , they'd likely be out of business. I think TForce teamster are looking at the big picture.

"Alot of guys at tforce are hung up on the hourly rate and don't see the whole compensation package". Because tomorrow is not guaranteed I need my $ now.

Where did you hear that ABF is in financial trouble? ABF has profited over $300 million over the last three years. And it looks like this year will be our most profitable year ever if it keeps going like it is now.

Abf is not in financial trouble. That is absolute bs. As far as abf insurance it is very good. The gentleman talking about it being 15 dollar copay and everything else is 100% is bs also. We don’t pay anything out of our paycheck. It’s 20$ copay for any doctors. We have a 200$ deductible per person and a 1000$ max out of pocket per year, then everything is 100% except for doctor copays. Prescription plan is fantastic. A lot of medications for 90 day supply is less than 1$. Dental is also great. 100% on cleanings, fillings, root canals. 80% on crowns and major work. Vision is also good. Covers 150$ on frames and about half on good lenses.
