Yellow | Smoking restriction in trucks?

You can enforce that in a building but it's impossible to enforce it in a truck. Unless someone wants to follow the truck with his car that's something that cannot be enforced. It is up to the man driving the truck to decide on what kind of enviornment he will spend the day in. If the guy using it before you wants to leave his mess behind, then it's up to you to either do something about it or sit in it. I would never go to a boss to complain either. That's not me. I'll do what I have to do to make my day tolerable.

We have been through this topic many times. The only real answer is to assign trucks to every driver at Yellow. But we all know that this is impossible, Or is it?

I do smoke and I clean the truck out before I leave the terminal and when I get in to the terminal. I make sure that there are no ashes and papers and anything left behind to make the truck look bad.

I am still trying to figure out why some drivers must rip the cabinet doors off or pull the center piece of the shifter off or smash it into the shifter? Or poke the headliner with holes to hang their CB mike up. Or leave 100 old 199's in the truck.

The real answer is to prohibit smoking in all company vehicles, But we all know that this will not stop people. The minute you forbid something the more people go out of their way to defy it.

Like one of the drivers said before on this topic you have people writing on the bathroom walls at every terminal, and all you can do to stop that is to paint over the walls. We all have our opinions and I guess we all must make then known.

I have quit complaining about all of this and just cleaned it up so I could function as a driver in the truck. If everyone of us drivers did this I figure sooner or later we will all have cleaner trucks to drive. It's a little time invested on my part but I look at it this way, The next driver of that truck will be happy to drive a clean truck.

DETRob..that is why I now run a bid that lets me keep the tractor the whole 2 tours. That way I just have to clean 3 trucks instead of 6 a week! I just wonder how some of these driver's personal vechicle and/or home looks like if they do this at work?....KK

i dont smoke and i hate the smell in the tractors should i become creative and leave something behind in a smokey tractor for you besides the nicotene on the rubber steering wheels is nasty

.you guys sure are a different type of teamster than I grew up with, if is no wonder why we are losing business to non union outfits, your are too worried about chicken ::shit:: things like cigarrett smoke, instead of concentrating your efforts on organising our non union friends ,You don't attend union meetings ,You go along with all the company sponsered things ,such as Truck driving championship contest,Does one get paid for this service ?
As for the smoking thing goes ,as I stated before ,I crack the window and watch the smoke go out so I don't see were a guy would have a ***** about smoke smell in the cab.
Good Teamster jobs are going down the :shit:ter and you guys are worried about cigarret smoke in a truck !!!!Just what kind of men are you guys???

I can say that I have attended my meetings. As for Us wanting a cleaner truck and no smoking in them Thats the topic of this conversation. I have been trying to organize Con-Way but was kicked off their forum for "promoting Violence". Their words not mine. So I could care less about them anymore. They get what they deserve. But the topic of this thread is a continuing nuisance among all drivers. I smoke and I too hate to drive a tractor after some pig has driven it. So Instead of complaining about it, I just take care of the problem myself. But if you want to discuss union problems then we can do that too on the Union Forum. I will be more then happy to engage you there.

The reason I started this thread is to get a feel for how the majority of you drivers think of the issue of smoking. A smoking restriction would probably never happen and if it did would not be enforcable, even if someone were foolish enough to try. It would never work and that has already been said here.
I found this poll interesting though as it indicates most of those who took the poll so far, favored some sort of non-smoking environment. I thought that in our industry of drivers that it would be very strong in favor of the smokers.
Non smoking establishments and cities are now becoming more and more common. I certainly do not know the answers to how to make everyone satisfied in this matter. There will probably always be a conflict of interest between the rights of smokers and non smokers. The city I work in has a smoking ordinance. Yellow has a policy of non-involvement at my terminal. They have posted no smoking signs etc. but they do not activley enforce the rule, and although signs are posted, it is largley ignored by many.

So, I learned something from this in that the restrictions in restarants and in some cities that have gone non smoking do represent the majority of drivers as well as the general population.:smilie_132:

All good Ideas, but enforcement definitly becomes an issue. The Co.won't do anything if it cost them money. I don't smoke in the trucks but I do smoke from time to time. I go out of my way to make sure the truck is as clean or cleaner than when I go in it. I understand what you are saying about the cigar smole in the tractors. I got in one the other say in d it smelled like a gorilla took a dump in it. I could not drive the unite until the shop sent someone out to clean the inside out (yes it was that bad). I really don't have a problem with the guys smoking in the trucks. Just be responsible and considerate of you fellow drivers and clean up after yourself. Food has also been an issue. I can't count the number of tractors I've gotten into and there is food and rappers all over the place which might come in handy if you get trapped in the truck during bad weather for an extended period of time but it sucks if you are trying to get somewhere. Point is that it is almost un-enforceable. I mean are you going to have some one from the CO. check the truck each time you leave for and return from a run. NO!!! Again the cost factor. I guess ther best you can do is lookout for yourself and be considerate of other. If you really want to open up that can of worms then why not go after the Fundementalist Christians that seem to think that they need to save everyones soul by scribbling crosses and religious retoric all over the insides of the cabs or the politicos whoseem to think they need too tell everybody how to vote and how to act and what is good for them. My point is that it will never happen and the easiest solution is to simple deal with it and move on.

Cigarettes on dash.jpg

For some the dash doubles as an ashtray!

Disgusting. Like I said before, I would figure out a way to deal with this without going to a boss. Off the top of my head, I would take a wad of paper towels, use them to hard wipe the dash, then leave the thing laying up there on top of the dash. Let's see how good those cigarettes taste with a smell of Fantastik or amonia floating around the cab.

I had a truck that was worse than that! It had ashes on the dash by the gauges, in the deep cup holder, and there was a nice film on the plastic covering the gauges. The truck that I had today just smelled like cigarettes and had ashes as well as a nice layer of dust on the lower dash area by the cup holders. Opened up the ashtray built into the dash and it was empty. Imagine that. It doesn't even bother me anymore and I've only been working for 57 days. It took me a good hour to deodorize, pre-trip, and set up my radio. Just for kicks I've been thinking of leaving an unwrapped condom in the ashtrays of a couple of trucks. Yeah, it sounds juvenile, but just think of all the rumors and dust it'll stir up amongst the smokers.:hysterical: It may seem like a little fun, but in the end, it'll probably be more trouble than a good laugh is worth. So, if it happens, it wasn't me!

This is one of my favorite anti-smoking commercials. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Glad I dont have to slip-seat.I could eat off the floors if I wanted, and I can fart and it still smells like Fabreeze in my truck..

That would be nice,
As a hostler I get in lots of trucks every day. I see em all. Thanks to all the drivers who run a clean truck!

I have experience with people who just plain don't get it. A long while ago I was assigned to a truck on a day when it's regular assigned driver took the day off. I get in and there is a solid coating of dirt on the windshield. For whatever the reason, this man was under the impression that if you leave the windshield dirty, the dirt acts like tinting. Great. In the early morning sun I pull the unit around the corner of the building and when the light hits the winsdhield I am left with a brilliant whiteout that resembles a movie screen. I stopped by the shop, hit the glass with the hose and do the wiper thing. Fine and dandy, I get through the day and that should have been that. The next morning, pigpen arrives and sees the infraction that I have committed. He goes ape and starts screaming at me in front of the entire shape yelling about how I ruined his truck and it was going to take a long time to get the glass back to being as dirty as it was. I said nothing in my own defense. He was a senior man and all that. I just let it go but I kept thinking about it all day. The next time that the planets alligned and I took the same truck out I was ready. I had my full bottle of industrial strength windex along with an old newspaper. I stopped at my first customer, and cleaned every piece of glass on that unti right down to showroom quality. The next morning when he starts screaming again I waitined until the veins in the top of his head went down and informed him that I had broken no company rules as to cleaning the glass and I had violated no section of the contract. If he had anything to charge me with please do so without breathing on me. Case closed, he never bothered me again.

If companies would assign their "slob drivers" the worst piece of equipment on the lot and explain their reasoning, maybe wiping the windows, floors, and dash at least once a month wouldnt seem such a dirty task.

wouldn't be so bad if the smokers would just vent their smoke.
ever jump into a tractor after one of these guys closes all the vents and recirculates the inside air?

I used to work at a place that one of the drivers smoked worse than I did. The only time he would open the window was to toss the butt out of it. I had to drive his truck on occasions and would just write "Hi your name" in big letters right where you look out of most of the time. Others would do the same. Some would date theirs. Six months later you could still see a faint outline of the writing.

i may not smoke any more but i did so i can see both sides of this coin. i feel the driver that are on the road for days or even weeks at a time should be allowed to smoke. the reason i feel this is that truck is thier home and i feel that they should be allowed this little bit of freedom. now if they are runing teams and one smokes and the other doesn't then one of two things should happen either team up a smoker with a smoker and non with a non or compenset the non smoker some how, either alittle more per mile, a reduction in the amount that driver has to pay for their benifits, alittle more home time. something would have to be done heck if the smoking driver has the desire maybe the company could help that driver to quit smoking if he deisres to, there has to be a common ground that is fair to both sides on this one:hide:

Holland Columbus terminal had meetings this past week saying that smoking is banned in company equipment. This is in the state of Ohio. If you get a ticket while smoking in the truck in Ohio you are subject to disiplinary action.
