It is out of your hands. Things will work out, this is a good company to work for. If you loose your job, you still get a crap load of money that they really don't have to pay you and you also get to collect unemployment for years. It will work out. This is a win win ladies and gentlemen.

Yeah, all things considered this isn't so bad.
I've been through 2 shutdowns in my time...one with an OTR carrier and one with a mail contractor.
With the OTR carrier, they just went out of business and stranded guys out on the road.
Fuel cards shutoff, terminals chained up, phones disconnected...it was a real hoot.
No severance, no transition assistance, no nothing.
Ditto with the mail contractor.
In that case, I never got paid for my last two weeks...they still owe me over $2,000.
It took 2 years of them going through bankruptcy court...but they were mortgaged to the hilt and us drivers still ended up with nothing.

What FedEx is doing makes sense from a business perspective and will make the company stronger and more competitive down the road.
The dovetailing and seniority process is for the most part fair, IMHO.
My only issue is with guys who transferred to these relay points.
A bunch of city guys I know transferred to a certain unmentioned relay point that's shutting down...I was set to go with them but my Dad got sick and I had to stay put.
It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as I'll most likely be able to follow the freight as a city driver with my company + board seniority...I'll know for sure like the rest of you come Monday, but from what I've been told I'll be OK.
These guys who transferred 8 months ago are probably out of a job...no freight for them to follow...no opportunity to bid back into the city from where they came from...and their board seniority in linehaul is a whopping 8 months.
It's BS the way this was done...you can't tell me FedEx didn't plan a merger of this magnitude less than 8 months ago.

I'll probably stay on for awhile but I'm pretty much making moves to get out of trucking altogether.
I've got enough $$$ saved up...I'm going to start taking classes...probably go for something in the medical field.
I don't like the way this industry is headed at all...I've seen enough good people get screwed by these trucking companies.

I have never been laid off or given a severance so my question is the folks that take the severance....they have to sign something in order to get it. So they are walking away from the company. Are they eligible for unemployment since they technically are quitting? I just want to make sure these folks have good info and don't take the package voluntarily to find out in 12 weeks they are SOL

from what I'm hearing, i think more are gonna take the buyout than expected. The thing is, they can tell you that you have a job but, some natl guys don't realize how it really works at freight as far as dock/combo runs, logs are different, no more hooked sets, break and put to dock etc etc. There's alot of the older guys that just don't wanna have to deal with it. Actually, if health insurance wasn't such an issue I believe even more would leave JMO

we know in all the confusion, things aren't going to be explained very well either

Attention all! Be very careful in your decision to carry on with purple. Freight must show a profit quickly. The merger wasn't done for the sake of just doing something to please the powers that be. Again, these changes must bring about results (A PROFIT!) and it must come quickly.

Man! I'm sure glad that you told us! I'm going to go in Monday, and tell everybody that we need to quit our jobs. Heck, I'm even going to call all of my friends at the National yard and tell them to quit too. :clapping: Exactly what the hell kind of post is that supposed to be? Hey liedtoagain, have you ever heard that it is better to remain silent, and be thought a fool, than to keyboard up, and remove all doubt?

You seem to discount what he says, but I think what he says has merit. We need to show a profit. However, we won't as long as they think running freight is like running packages. They waste fuel in sending several drivers into the same stop. And that happens now with us just being Freight. It's ok to send two drivers into the same stop, or the same driver several times, but a 2 minute idle shutdown will save fuel. (It doesn't).

What happens Arkansaswolf manager if we don't make a profit in a short amount of time? Dump more drivers? Dump more dock workers? Or..... do they look at what worked in the past and will work again because it's f***ing reasonable and WORKS?!?!?!?

I don't expect much from the nobs that run this company. They knew this was coming and decided to just throw it out there and let the pieces fall where they may. I'm betting they hope the old timers will just take the pay off and get the hell out. I know I wish I was in a position to do that. I would be so gone. Since my experience and skills don't matter because they think a 20 year old can do the same job as me. (Good luck with that).

I ain't a lawyer but when you take a severance package you are indeed quitting. That is all you will get.

No unemployment insurance at all.

That's how it has always worked in the past anyhow.

Good luck to all of you drivers in the days and weeks ahead.

I wish you all the best of luck! I know it's nerve racking now but things will get better one way or the other. Btw, still laid off from YRC since 10/08

Well I like how cityboys first post is don't worry about it........must be in management........second this is not a win win for everybody there were several people who have recently transfered or just got hired on who are gonna take it in the shorts. People are losing their liviliehoods here. I feel sorry for the new hires and the recent transfers who basically won't have a job come January, which we all know is a great month to go find a job. If this company was going to be fair they would say ok here's your buyout you can go ahead and leave. Here's your transfers you start at XYZ Freight terminal on Monday. For all you new hires and recent transfers here's your options of terminals you can transfer to. BUT they are not going to do that. They are givving you a week to decide to take the buyout and then you gotta stay until January to get the money. Then for people who are eligible to transfer same deal. Then all the rest well sorry after January you can reapply....We'd love to have you start out the bottom................Win Win???????????............cityboy do really think so?????????

Less employees---Less overhead

Less termainal upkeep---Less overhead...

Clear Profit!!

Good luck to all involved!!!

If you loose your job, you have your severance pay and unemployment to hold you over until you get a new job. They don't have to give you anything. They could just kick you out and be done. No i am not management. I work hard everyday. Its not all gloom and doom. If you fall they atleast put out a mat for you to fall on. Quit being a baby. Stop your crying and man up.

Manager? That's funny! You didn't understand my reply to that goofball. He only registered with that screen name to stir crap, ('stay with purple', now there's some inside lingo that proves that he's a real employee :clapping: ). I guess that I didn't drink enough beer last night to take him serious, so I am not going to debate you on what you think I was saying. :coffee1:

I asked the question about the severance pay and they told me if you take the severance pay you are not eligible for 1 year to get a job with any fedex company
this came from Human Resources fedex.
hope it helps

Now, I'm only guessing on this! 1. If they give you your severance now, you would pay taxes on it this year. That would hurt most, since you would pay at higher tax rate, if you worked all year. 2. Jan.30th is about the time we get our taxes done. ??? That would probably help quite a few people with their bills during that time they're trying to find a job. 3. If you look at the handout, it states you will wait 14-21 days to receive your severance check. It's all about the timing. I think, the powers that be think, if we get a bunch of money in our face, people won't bad mouth them too bad and go quietly away. Now, Mom use to say "the only substitute for intelligence is silence", and Ron White said "there is no cure for stupid"! I drank enough whiskey last night, killed enough brain cells to be called that and sit quietly in the corner and drool.

Thanks for the classy post

Yeah, thats why they give the 90 day lay off option. But seriously, who in their right mind will take that!? The layoffs of 2008 come to mind, do not know any that were rehired back on.

I mean if you have the choice of leaving with 10k+ up to 40K before taxes are taken as well as whatever vacation & sick pay available, and the portable pension that is payable upon separation minus taxes to count on if need be,versus maybe in 90 days you can have a job, it makes sense to take the monies and just leave and move on & start over somewhere else since it is becoming unheard of to have job security anymore anyway. Most drivers I know joined Fedex for what they thought would be job security.

The paperwork I have says the severance check would be issued at the end of your employment. If you take the severance package, you will still have to work until January 29, 2011.
