R&L | No Sales

the new sales manager, came in the morning asked us to get one more bill, gave a speach about not being able to sleep at nite until the layoffs got there jobs back and the next day,,,,,fired two reps,,,senior one included!

Company used to also always email within the company when someone was "no longer with the company". That has stopped and I think it is so they do not broadcast how many will be let go.

. Agrred, we used to know as soon as things happened and now we are hearing nothing. Seems like there are changes going on everyday!:smilie_132:

2 directors and 5 reps (out of 42 or so) in 2 divisions were let go. I am not sure how many were added in FL - I don't *think* it was 7 however. I know the 4 in FL were filled, and the one in ATL was filled - with a former R+L Rep, not a YRC rep.

The recently aquired sales manager for R&L in FL is formerly of YRC and they did replace the 4 reps let go with 7 reps from YRC... would appear as a plan to bring YRC business aboard as soon as possible if something should happen with the YRC service cacpabilities in the future.. IMO

That's all well and good. But if these guys think they are going to slash and burn our rates they are not going to be successful. Yellow has a lot of National Account business and I really do not think that we are going to low ball the rates to put this type of freight on board. What would be the point of bringing it on if there is no profitability!

I agree freightgal. We will hold our rates. What is the point of moving freight if you are going to loose money? We are good at what we do, we don't need the extra practice.

Come on FreightGal.......you really think that they will not bring on this business. R+L has already stated to go away form their model (that has been successful) last year when they started going after pallet rates, discount in the 80's. I just want to know who got the ear of R+L ownership to FIRE veterans (some with 20+ years) that helped them to build the company and bring A LOT of folks from YRC........yes the YRC that lost nearly a Billion Dollars in 2008. I don't care if it due to write downs or what........it's pretty crappy and will come at the cost of many good, hard working YRC employees. And on top of that, R+L is bringing in more people to replace those that were let go...........hope this does not cost R+L too much.

I used to be told that the + in between the R and L was a cross to show the families Christian belief..........I think that is fading.

OK, it was a total of 5 reps added to replace 4 in FL, not 7, but yes, all were former Yellow reps - extra rep was added in the JAX market.

And like FreightGal said, a lot of YRC business seems to come from national accounts, high volume, low margin. The local reps can't do anything about that per se, but it will be interesting to see how this works out in FL - economy down there has been brutal for a while now.

I am all for giving something a shot, and trying something different, but if the family doesn't like the results, well ask Randy Swartz how fast they will make a change.

It is getting harder and harder to hold rates (not impossible) when others are slashing them, and our customers are forced to look harder at their bottom line.

It might be slow but we still have freight on our trailers.... Was told we will not cut rates just to get more freight. Many of the people getting fired (ops and sales) thought they were untouchable... They were set in their ways of doing things. The meetings we've had sounds like R&L is moving ahead with or without those people.....

LONG LONG ago I was at a meeting that Larry Roberts was at and I asked him what the R+L was, how did he get that name. His reply was my names... Ralph and Larry thus R+L. Mary Roberts said this was true. Nothing to do with being a Christian. But here's something maybe only old timers know... When they used to have the Christmas party at the horse show facility Larry gave his little speech talking about the company and his family. He looked at his mother and said not bad for a welfare kid with no education. In the early yrs, there were 2-3 sales meetings a yr. He used to tell the reps how many new trucks he had gotten. 5-10 LOL and that we had to generate revenue to pay for them. What a great little company it was then...

Seems they all go the same way. Start out with good solid principles taking care of all the people who work to get them to the top then they fall apart and abandon all logic. Sad to see them get sucked in. R+L, Overnite, AF, Estes the list goes on. Seems OD is about the last one to stick to their guns. Just my humble opinion.

personally i think the changes within the organization show that the roberts family want to see this company go to a new level. we may not agree with all the decisions they make, but we need to realize that this shake up reflects their commitment to the employees and the future of the company. i had heard the new president has spent a lot of time traveling to terminals over the last few weeks meeting employees and customers. i am sure he is getting a first hand of issues in the field which we have never had in the past. i think we need to ride this ship out...were still well ahead of our competition who were reading about in the papers everyday!!
