I heard layoffs were not necessarily done by seniority in some places, somebody said a couple rodeo men got " skipped over ".Seniority was an illusion anyway unless it was convenient. How many times have you seen a young pup run while an old dog sits at home because there's " no freight " ?

Friendly reminders......this is a non union forum, all union/non union discussion belongs in the union/non union forum. Also this is not a doom and gloom forum. The work will come back and most everybody that wants work will have it.We don't have a forum for depression but if you start it.....I will tell you where you can put it.And last but not least.....I get really upset when I find a man getting paid to post on here, really upset.

I was told last night and before how our terminal does the figuring of who gets laid off and who stays. First it is not a pleasant job for anyone, because we have a bunch of great people, but it goes by disciplinary, productivity, and seniority. If 2 guys have the pretty much the same amount of write ups, or even possibly none at all, it goes to who is the most productive, if that is the same, it goes to seniority, who is the newest hire.

Management is only doing what they are told to do, we all thought we were going to dodge this latest round because our first cut was pretty deep.

I wish the best for everyone, it does add a certain amount of stress each day, but life goes on.

I hope and pray for the freight levels to come back up, not only for O.D., but for everybody, so we can all get back to work.

Have a great day.

Orders were given from CORPORATE to cut the bottom guys. No if, ands or buts about it. Several great workers were let go, and several turds still remain.
On another note, I know you are moderator, but why is it that every time someone offers a comment or suggestion you don't agree with, do you assume they are promoting a union. I think most OD employees are intelligent enough to know that the U is the devil. Let people utilize their freedom of speech and express their thoughts and opinions. Isn't that what this board is all about? Maybe you should go moderate th eunion board!

ive herd rumors that the dock layoff at mrt was done by productivity and not seniority but ive not been to the term in a week hopefully ill have a load today or tommorrow if i here anything ill try to post from the road

I was told that MRT did go by dock seniority. Two years and under. They had "combo drivers"that got skiped over because they can drive and work the dock.

The layoffs up here were strictly on classification&terminal seniority, the 2 wild drivers here were the lowest seniority at our terminal.

I am not about to use the U word. But to go along with the spirit of this thread, I was laid off after 9 years with the company without reguard for job performance and / or time on the job. Like I have said before, even though I was laid off in November, I still have nothing bad to say about OD. A few BAD managers do make for a bad company. I will say, though that the upper management needs to get back to where they were when it was a "family" company, and not just a company that puts its stockholders BEFORE its employees, and show that they are doing so by taking a pay cut in an effort to save some jobs. Yeah, times are tuff, but now is a GOOD time to show that we are ALL in this together, rather than throwing good people to the curb. Now is a good time for OD to start showing what they mean by "OD family". Now is not the time for upper management to be given raises.

i have to agree the family feeling has been gone since we got the larger building.when i have gone to the smaller terminals with relays it is kind of like going home.it just feels like it used to in the smaller terminal.it is not about the numbers as much as getting the job done with teamwork.

Yeah, there are still alot of good people at OD. I miss working with them. I am sure that Dave C. is not taking these layoff lightly, but the problem is that here are people in the senior management that have come on with OD (from some of the shot-down, bankrupt companies that hey bout out) that aren't too woried about loosing a few people as long as they still get paid. I noticed in the past few years that some of the people in corporate seemed like they were spending money in a way that didn't seem like a wise choice at the time.

But, like I said before, I still like OD as a whole, but there are several people that need to go, and several more people that aren't getting paid enough. It would probably be a wise choice to start in the shops, since the shop is nothing but a bleeding artery of cash, even as nessicary as they are. There is A-L-O-T of money that can be saved there.

I would'nt disagree that some money could be saved in the shops,However taking an axe to the maintenance dept.would'nt make me feel very comfortable,We depend on those people for our(and the publics)safety, disruptions in the shops could endanger lives, destroy property, and(least important)ruin productivity,I'd advise caution before messing around the shops.:TR10driving03:

I cannot agree more, but there is alot of fat that can be trimmed. There are too many people in there that aren't doing the work, but taking the credit for it, and they are NOT the ones getting layed off. If there is gonna be layoffs, it needs to be with some accountability. Having said that, though, I was always impressed at how well OD provided for us to do our jobs properly. The only unsafe equipment that OD has is the stuff that they get rid of.

in the four years i have been here, i have only had 2 blown tires, none in the last 2-2.5 years. my current truck has 365000 miles and has never been on the side of the road, nor do i see any other od trucks on the side of the road. i think that says alot about our maintenance program.

i've went by the the largest ltl co. the past 2 weeks and every morning the road repair tire truck is there. seems kinda expensive

i will definitely take what i have now. i still enjoy heading into work each and every night, even last friday with all the blue and pink on the screen.

The maintenance department has made cutbacks. They've laid off a number of technicians. Most of whom might not have been pulling their weight.

Old Dominion has the best maintenance program of any outfit I've worked for. I'd like it to stay that way.

Youre right. The regional manager that they had in the southeast started at OD back in the 1800's (or something like that) changing tires. He has moved WAY up in the company. When you keep people like him, it makes for a good maint. department. You're right, though, they DO have one of the best in the buisness, I just hope it stays that way. The layoff's we had in our shop had NOTHING to do with who was pulling weight in the shop. I just hope not only that they don't have any more layoffs, but God forbid if they do, there will be legitamite justification for who they lay off. There are guys still there that not only NOT pull their weight, but make it worse for others whe we would have to go back and REdo what they tried to fix in the first place. But, I am SOOO glad that I don't have to decide who goes. Maybe they saw something about me that I didn't, but I wasn't born yesterday. I know good and well that I was layed off because my supervisor didn't have to justify ANYTHING to anyone.

All that told, if OD could / or would hire me as a driver, I would GLADLY drive any equipment that they have. They are THE best LTL our there, and a good company overall. One BAD supervisor doesn't make for a bad company in the slightest. After looking on this board, I am VERY glad to see that OD still has some good people working for them that still believe in OD as much as I still do.

Best of luck to ya'll, and be careful out there. Hopefull freight will pick up, and OD will be needing some more drivers. When they do, I'll be the first to apply.

Wow, he's old. OD holds the secret to longevity.
