FedEx Freight | Paying for uniforms?

Well my opinon on the uniforms is that we don't need as many.
Look, we're freight drivers not parcel guys.
I rarely deal with the end-of-the-line customer, it's mostly warehouse folks.
I'll go into a place and a SAIA driver will get double the skids I do, and he's wearing some goofy-looking Burger King uniform-shirt, jeans, and old workboots.
Not that I look any less goofier in my Barney purple and black monkeysuit.
It's just that SAIA only provides a uniform shirt for their drivers.
While FedEx wants the whole she-bang.
Which costs alot more moolah...both for me and FedEx.

I mean, does anyone really care how we look?
Nope.
They just go down the list and give the freight to the lowest bidder.
Hell, FedEx does the same damn thing.
The unshaven/unkempt PT guy wearing the wifebeater with half of last night's buffett all over it gets more FedEx freight than our own linehaul men.

Just give us uniform shirts and maybe a hat and a jacket and that's about it.
I'd rather wear a nice, comfy pair of jeans then those FedEx jumpsuits.
I ain't high maintenence.
White socks and blue ribbon beer!!! :guiness:

The simple question is, who does this new policy help ? The company or the employee? Just one more straw on the employees backs. I will look like a homeless man before I spend one dime of my money for fed ex branding.

how many shirts/pants do you go through a year ? maybe a couple get ripped.

And it's not like they are making you pay from your check. You are getting a yearly bonus for uniforms.

We have a bid that is 34 miles one way and the other 8 hours is dock work. You can go through more than a couple. We have to think about people that work the dock not just drive.

This not true. FedEx will set an allowance for uniforms. Employees will be able to order anything they want as long as they stay within the set amount. If you happen to go over that amount, you will be responsible for paying it. Nothing is set in stone yet as far as an amount but it will be and they will let you know when it is. They are just trying to cut down on the extra things that we don't use and just stay in the bags they came in. They have to save money somewhere. I agree with what they're doing....

You're correct about setting an allowance. The problem is the amount of the allowance anounced is $50.00. That should just about cover 1 full uniform and maybe an extra shirt. I will look like I am homeless in a FedEx uniform before I spend 1 dime on a uniform. Check your state's labor laws, some states require the company to pay for mandatory uniforms.

ATTENTION: They had such positive feedback they change the allowance. For ALL DRIVERS your allowance is 130 per year and for Dock Associates is 105 or so. Yes all companies need to cut corners to save money and YES even FedEx. They really need to just allow employees to order a shirt when a shirt needs to be replaced and a pair of pants when replacing needs to take place. Just bring in the worn item and show the office manager and order a new item. What hurt the policy was, "Oh its been 12 months I need new shirts, pants and a coat." Even if the items really did need replacing. At least they did change it so we can order two pair of pants and two shirts or what ever it figures out to be.

I don't see how we hurt the program ...just getting what was given to us to wear every year

Changing to a different style of uniforms at least 4 times in the last few years ..... did that help either?

Oh ya ...I forgot how well made the britches were .....

I've been sitting back getting a kick out of reading all the crying before the final word came down. This came out to workers before the final word came down. Yep some SCM's jumped the gun!!! and didn't try to have it reversed or adjusted properly. There was never communication to have meetings about the changes yet. These SCM's love to see their employees in turmoil and pissed off so they might slip up and do something to lose their job or quit. It's my understanding that our SCM sat on this and tried to do what he could to point out this was very unfair to the employee and now due to people like him, it has been resolved. Now it has been announced to our barn for the first time and maybe settled down channel 4 for a while. :tapedshut:

You can deduct for the uniforms but it is like your medical expenses, you can only deduct what is above the threshold. I think it may be 3 or 4% of your taxable income. Save your receipts. The other problem is that the uniform can not be deemed ordinary clothes otherwise they do not meet the tax deduction criteria. You would think the powers that be would have the decency to have this question answered

Whats funny is reading my handy dandy new associate handbook revised in May of 09 its says uniforms are provided free of charge to employees.:biglaugh:

Which of course means that it can change at anytime, so don't think you a final say because it's written down.

Having said that, their "change" in uniform policy doesn't seem to matter much. I'm thinking it is more record keeping PER indivual employee.

I was told that if I ripped my parka, all I would have to do is go through about 5 layers of people to get it replaced. Stupid, but I can get it replaced eventually. Say, if it rips in November, I could probably get my replacement about August.

Paying for uniforms

yes uniforms are not free any longer. you get $80 yearly for uniforms, including jackets and coat. everything after that , comes out of your pocket.

Welcome to the boards FREIGHT GURU.
So is the final word on this ?
Do you have the price list ?

Do you have the price list ?

The prices are the the order form. Shirts are $15, pants are $13. I think the parka is about $60. Can't remember the other stuff, but I was told that if you do need to exceed your $130 allowance, you can get more, but there are some hoops to jump thru. It all seemed pretty reasonable to me.

We were told $130. And, if you spend that and something happens, like you rip a shirt or get paint on your parka, there are hoops to go through to get a new one without paying for it.
