As a driver at ABG i feel some need to post the good in times that are so bad. Reading some other posts here it seems the bad times really bring out the worst in people. I guess that is just a sign of how bad the economy really is. In times like these we need to be strong for ourselves and the company. Let's face it the positives may seem hard to find but if you pull your head up and look around you will see most everyone else is going through the same things.
For us here at ABG the last couple of weeks have been rough. Most drivers are getting one day a week off but it could be worse. Land Air chooses to go with a rolling day off meaning each driver gets one day off with at least four days a week even in the worst times. I really cant afford these short weeks but hey at least im working instead of being layed off. Our management at ABG seems to try to make sure everyone gets their forty hours. We as well as all at Land Air are under a ten percent pay reduction which also hurts and makes it tough in these bad times but hey the company is suffering much worse than a ten percent pay cut. Look around and see what other companies are going through right now. Nobody in the LTL buisness is doing very well in these bad times.
Yes we have our problems like low pay, short hours, and an increase in our health insurance premiums. But couldnt it be much worse? Of course it could and that is why i choose to be postive in these bad times. I have faith that as soon as things get better so will our pay and hours. Im not a long time veteran here but im not blind either. Land Air is a family oriented company and im sure when things get better for the Spencers it will get better for us as well. We all need to believe this and the rest will all work it's way out.
Take a minute and put yourself in the Spencers seat. Some are whining and the rates are at an all time low. Fuel is at an all time high and so is just about all operating expenses. We are in the worst economic times of our life and no sure sign is yet to be seen as to when all this misery will end. Why not lay off employees and scale way back untill things get much better? Why not push employees to the breaking point and increase production with reduced labor costs to make these bad times more profitable for themselves? I will tell you why. Beacause they are human and do actually care about their people. I know very little about the Spencers but it is obvious to me they are good people. They own a company their Dad started which is very succesfull and offers a service that is second to none in the New England Market. They compete with many companies in this area and without shareholders and big executives for some reason they manage to do just fine. We all should be very happy we have a family owned company to work for instead of some shareholder who cares only about his or her own profit.
It could be so much worse. Take some time and read through the other companies on this forum and you will see what i mean. I for one would like to thank the Spencers for having a love for this buisness and keeping us all going in these bad times. Im sure when things do get better we will all be rewarded for helping keep this company afloat in the worst depression of our lives.
Now let all that sink in and if you still feel it's so bad here than you should move on. Time for all of us to give a little more and help this company continue to be the best in the buisness. It's almost amazing we are staying in the black even in the worst times of our life.
