In Billerica(09) a driver told me he went into a pick-up and there was no paperwork for NPs freight, only to find the Con-Way driver there had signed the bill. when confronted the CW driver gave up the bill and said sorry its been a long day!. Then when the NP driver talked to the tm about it, the tm said this was the third same kind of incident that day. Any other terminals out there have this happening? Seems to me CW management must b telling their guys to get our freight!. Is this happening to YRC also?

i haven't seen anything like this. then again, on my route, us and Conway don't have the same customers.

This nothing new for Con Way, I was told years ago that con way drivers would go in a traffic managers office when no one was looken and take copys of other carriers bills and take them back to their sales dept.

fed-ex freight is doing the same thing all over and they are determined to try and run out you and yrc....and thats coming from fed-ex drivers who are disgusted in which way they are trying to steal business..but i wouldnt put it past anybody out there trying to steal freight like conway or fed-ex...

Long before Yell bought Rdwy we had a meeting to make sure to use the whole page of pro stickers or throw the extras away at the terminal. We found out a driver was taking them out of the garbage at a customer and giving to his Sales to track the freight through our web site. Don't know all the info that can be obtained from that but anyway I complied from that day forward. Now I'm not trying to start anything but at the time it was Holland that was doing it. So nothing surprises me.

I usually work the dock but went out a few times this month. I went to get my bill signed and as I turned around to go back to my trailer the con-way guy was looking very hard at the shippers name on my sticker. I was in a hurry and wanted to get home so I kept walking. Really ridicuously looking at it though, really really close. maybe they have an incentive program for leads, who knows........lame.

They all do, years ago Yellow was giving gifts cards to the driver with the most leads .I rember 25 -30 years ago I myself got cettificates for grocerys. Times were good then . Ya know their pushen them guys like hell now. With out a union they might have to meet a quota just to keep their jobs.

Our P&D drivers are advised to see if there are any shipments on the customers dock desiginated for other carriers and ask if we can take those also, especially in a direct service area. If late in the day, some shippers will say sure, especially if the other carrier is late for the pick-up.

A couple of years before Jones closed they had a sales lead program with the prize being a new truck. A guy from Memphis won. He went to the extreme with his method of getting sales leads. He beat the system by going to the chamber of commerce and compiling a list of every shipping point in our region. Theres probably a Jones driver that can add to this. I didn't work for them, I was a competitor.

There is a big difference between sales leads and actually taking freight that is sitting on a shippers dock that has a different company name on it..I think that is what is happening now..and where this thread started..I know we have a lot of shippers that the building is open late and you go find your paperwork and load it yourself being the shipping mgr is long gone..

All the carriers have on the back of their pro lable book is a place to jot down all that info. As far as loading some one elses freight I had it happen to me at Yellow where some one took our freight but the shipper always called the company back their dispatcher called them on the radio and returned it. Sometimes it was just a mistake . One time I had row of pallets and some how one pallet from some one else got mixed in with ours . Yeah sh-- happens

This is a BS thread to be honest.....If someone picks up freight that does not belong to them it causes great headaches....first you have pricing issues, next you have credit issues and finally you have cons issues.... a sales lead works much better than some one taking freight that is not tendered to them.

you sir are on point for this. one thing that everyone failed to mention : when you go to a shippers dock and take some other carrier's frt., almost 100% of the time the original carrier and shipper will notify the co. who "took" the frt and be instructed to either bring that frt back or they will send that carrier into your yard with his truck and that frt will be loaded onto his trailer with your dockman. ya'll need to stop with all this b.s.

Oh.......I guess you're right, I'll stop now. But I was soooooo good at it.......rats.....

Sales lead contest usually get about a 2% increase in business. Con-Way got a 20% increase in 4th quarter tonnage but an 11% drop in profit. Predatory pricing. They have been at it all of '09 trying to drive YRC out

I may be sticking my head on the chopping block here, but I have a question to a part of your quote.. What do you call "freight that doesn't belong to you"? The freight belongs to the customer, while on his dock..Then once you sign the BOL,it is the responsibility of the freight line to deliver it on-time and intact, without damage..All of us pick up freight at the same customers..It's up to the customer to ship the frieght..Unless you have a contract with that customer,in my experiences,it doesn't matter who gets it..And if he doesn't want you to pickit up,he'll be very quick to tell you "it's not for you"..I'm not trying to start a rif here, but I don't understand it when people make this comment..Thanks

Back when I peddled freight, customers used their own BOL(which they clearly had the intended shipper on it) or they used a company BOL(which obviously had the intended shipper on it).I would think it would be very damaging to take it upon ones self to pick up freight that wasn't designated to the company I worked for without shipper authorization. To that point,im skeptical of the post too.

Hey Loon, you need ya a Superbowl Champs avatar...

Funny thing it happened to me today.....but in the drivers defense the shipper f'ed up and told him it was his......he was about 3 miles down the road and had to come back.....no biggie
