Yellow | A simple phone call.

Great Post Northern Flash....we don't often agree on a lot of things but you are right on here !! I drive nights and the cell phone is used by the majority of our drivers (thank God for free night and weekend minutes), many of our drivers use well over 1,000 evening minutes per month and if it helps make us stay more alert and get thru the night more safely then I consider the cell phone a very important tool in doing our work for those of us who choose to use it.

Yes, cracking the window for fresh air, turning up the radio, a cold drink, slapping your face, etc etc etc etc etc.....(BLAH) may work for SOME !! Pull over and take a nap.....yes that works too, but be careful where you do this or you are target for a ticket, many interstate ramps now prohibit parking, rest areas at 3am.... FULL if not with other commercial vehicles, by campers or cars pulling trailers or four wheel vehicles that simply decide to use the "truck only" parking. Stopping on the shoulder for anything that is avoidable is a NO NO....we have all seen the results of that too many times....The lawmakers and do-gooders trying to ban cell phones from commercial vehicles once again, as with many other instances have no clue about what they are trying to regulate.

I belong to OOIDA (Trucking Association, Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association) and as this attempted ban progresses I am sure OOIDA would welcome driver comments on this issue to fight this ill-advised proposal.

Besides keeping a driver more alert, what are some of the other advantages of having a cell phone in our commercial vehicle and I am sure many of these lawmakers would appreciate or have been the recipient of some of these at one time or another.....reporting an accident (emergency), reporting an errratic driver, reporting a suspicious situation that is encoutaged by numerous terrorist alert groups now....the list goes on and on

We all have opinions on every issue. That's the great part of being an American. We each have the right to have an opinion. That's also the great thing about Truckingboards, we can debate back and forth most of the time, yet occasionally find some common ground.:1036316054:

You are correct when you say that the "do-gooders" have no idea what the consequences are of some of the regulations that they support. None of them ever try to get our side of story or attempt to look at both sides. It's always about pushing their agenda.

when sleep tries to overcome you: heres what to do: try to think of something you like to do... fix your kitchen cabinets or something in your house or your car or bike try doing it in a step by step way . (keep your mind moving just like your wheels on your truck.) the sugar or other nutrients{too much is not good for you it will reduce your brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is responsible for the development of new brain tissue. If you didn’t have this chemical in your brain, your brain wouldn’t develop properly and you would die very soon after birth. The key to BDNF is to understand what it does: it helps to create new neurons (nerve tissue), and, therefore new memories.} what is left in you goes to the brain and help give it a kick start. it has been shown that exercise is great for your brain, and it increases BDNF. BDNF info is from OlsonND. so try to stretch your legs or back to move some blood in that poor circulating sitting position you are in. if that is not doing it for you, you can practice boxing : ie put one hand on the wheel and drive and the other hand punch in the air about 10 times and do the same for your other hand 10 times this actually helps you get to tone your arms and move the blood in you. talking on the phone helps you to get out of that bored monotony situation you are in. as your talking you are thinking what next to say (good or bad) this helps to stimulate the brain. The brain works by controlling the function of the body especially automatic nervous system (ANS). It controls our heart beat, blood circulating, breathing, sweating, and all other systems in the body. Another function of the brain is to think. The brain thinks by receiving signals from our receptors of five senses including vision, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and kinesthetic. If we talk in a layman term they are seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching respectively. The sensory organs send the signals to the brain to interpret the meaning. We interpret it by comparing with the history record that we have to see what meaning we have for the received signals. The brain then orders the body to react according to the result of the meaning it gets from the processing step. This leads to how we feel and respond a certain way to the event. This process is called conscious level function of the brain. Because we know all the way about the process of thinking and interpreting, we call the process conscious. The conscious mind controls how we react to the circumstances. The thinking process in the conscious mind is through the words we communicate to ourselves. It controls the action and reaction including how we perform responsively. The function of the conscious brain is similar to the data processing program in the computer. It take input or what ever you type on, sensory reception, and process, thinking, and finally output onto your screen, action. It's yet again another attempt to legislate to eliminate the problems caused by the 10% of the idiots who can't walk and talk at the same time let alone drive and talk on a cell phone, I'm equally sure the answer to your issue would be to try to limit driving hours to some absurd number like 4 hours a day because one the legislators gets tired driving to the Senate chambers every morning so that means if he can't do it nobody else will able to either.......................

You're right. They won't be happy until we are making minimum wage and they are controlling everything but the air that we breath.

keep both hands on the wheel..stay in your lane..know where you're getting off or turning so you don't blow the exit and roll it over on the ramp or get lost and wind up in an accident or rear end some one and don't get caught chattin on the cell :coffee1:

I HIGHLY recommend the Blue Eagle BluTooth headset for chatting. Long life, wireless and crystal clear, even 100 feet away from the phone!

Well you are right. I thought he was driving in his 4 wheeler, (which is where keep my Strawberry scented candles) after driving the truck for the day. He got 8 hours sleep the night before but couldn't stay awake. I didn't realize he meant while trucking.

Maybe time for a sleep apnea test..........

No. It's not a normal problem for me to stay awake. It was just a boring ride for some reason. But it was nice to have the cell phone call to get me back on high alert again.

falling asleep at the wheel plus talking on the cell calls for a

Better than the Blueparrott?

YES!! Had mine now for 3 years+, no problems. Had to replace the mic foam once, that's it. 14 hours talk time, 144 hr stand by time, charges in 1 hour, vehicle charger. Works great in a noisy environment too, like this fine one owner, fleet maintained equipment we operate.
