SAIA | Tanker Endorsement

Yes I know.
But if you're doing LTL, and you pick up totes, that NOW is considered as needing the tanker endorsement. But check FMCSA.gov Surf to totes/tanker requirements for what's needed and when .

ive had mine since 1992 my tm kinda cornered me and told me i need to get my tanker endorsement the other day and to give him a new copy of my new cdl asap to meet the deadline and i said um your a little late bud lol. its an easy test though nuthin much to it just common since but now days not many drivers have much common since. think maybe they need to give at test to swift drivers to show them how to back into a parking spot at the pilot without taking off fenders and mirrors lol

And don't forget that when ever you go to UPDATE/RENEW your CDL,you have to bring your DOT LONG FORM physical,or depending on the state you live in just your DOT medical card to your state DMV or else the DMV won't update your CDL

Got it done today, and let out a big sigh of relief!

In CA you must pay $39, take a new photo, and ALL the tests. ( triples, hazmat, tanker, air brakes, plus general driving and truck driving) Six tests of 25-30 questions so to get one endorsement added on. Some of the guys are not passing all the tests on the first try, and need to re-take the ones they failed. If they fail again, you pay another $39 and start all over with the six tests.

You mean to tell me in order to add an endorsement, a person has to re-take the entire CDL tests? I don't understand...if you add tanker you have to re-take the general knowlege, air brakes, ect.? If thats the case, then I'm a bit upset. Seems like a waste of resources.

Yes, that's right. From now on, I will add any endorsement available each time I get a new license. Whether I need it or not, it's cheaper and easier than doing it all again.

Yet another way the powers that be have found to extract money from us...I often wonder, why pick us, we are all blue collar and we don't get rich out of this job, I guess they just don't care, I nearly hate this industry now, because of this and the lack of professional attitude among my peers that I ride down the turnpike with nightly....Why not pick on train men, or pilots, why regulate us to death? Why make it this expensive to remain in this profession?

somebody in the Legislature had a loved one die in a truck accident. they thought that these guys have it too easy. the fault is all these new four-wheel drivers grew up on video games, think its fun to pass the truck at 80 and hit the brakes to get off at the next exit

Well in Illinois, I only took the Tanker test,But I DID have to present a copy of my DOT Medical card before they would upgrade my CDL after I passed the test!!

Finally got around to it. There are two practice tests on the employee section of the company website. Give them the once over and you will do fine. In Texas, you show your medical card, CDL, and take the eye test. That plus $11.00 takes care of it.

20 bucks.. take the test in my state.. They didn't know about the change regarding tote bins.. Big surprise to me..Not!!!!

The new rule after Jan. 2013 (I think) is any trailer with containers over 119 gallons (totes) with a combined total over 1000 gallons will require a tanker endorsement.

I work at Southeastern Freight Lines, and they will require it as well. Guardrail, your right on the money although I believe it doesn't go into effect until July 2014. All Freight Carriers will be required to have a tanker endorsment, if they haul the big tote tanks.

I'm going for my Combination vehicle licence with tanker endorsement. I have a class B license and have driven a truck for about 15 years. Do I retake the air brake part because i already have that endorsement? Do i retake the general knowledge part also of the CDL test? How many question are actually on the CDL A/combination vehicle test? Same question for the tanker endorsement part? I'm just confused as to what will actually be on the written test? Thanks for any help, you guys never let me down on industry questions.

Buffy,I'm not sure what state you are in but here in Fl.if you already have a class B CDLwith airbrakes you will need to take the class A combination written test plus the class A skills test(road test). Then if you are going to work for SAIA or any other LTL company you will need to take the hazmat written test and the tanker test plus you will also need to take the doubles and triples test. When you take the hazmat test they will do a back ground test on you. The background check used to cost around $195 plus like$5 per endorsement. Most of these written tests can be found on line so you can practice. Good Luck and HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! Most of these tests are like 30 questions long.
