Yellow | Tanker Endorsement ?

I must be out of the loop here, I was required to have tanker endorsement when i renewed my hazmat when i went full time at yellow in 1989 ? Said that at that time totes over 1000 gallons required tanker endorsement ?

I don't think CDLs were in effect yet in 1989, I recall taking those tests in 1990 or so. I am guessing that you mean 1000 lbs there? I have yet to see a 1000 gallon tote.

:poster_oops:My mistake, I meant to say if total volume of totes loaded were in excess of 1000 gallons then the T endorsement was needed, i had tanker endorsement on my first cdl in 1980, and yes most totes are in the 250-to 500 gal range! My first class A cdl in 1980 with all endorsrments was only 25 questions and no driving test or DOT card! Went to work at Roadway in Joplin mo after the monster change at Bax Yellow and first thing big R wanted to know was if i had all endorsements on cdl and that was 18 plus years ago, but then i do have aggrement with YRC salary that i only use 15% of what brain i have left until wages and pension come back, it's only fair :duh:

Back then we only had class 1, 2 or 3 with 3 being the highest. It started around 1978 or so and had no endorsements. Before that anybody with a license could drive almost anything except motorcycle and maybe school bus. I never had to take a test to get my trailer license.

I have been driving since 1970 and I had to take a driving test to obtain my class 1 trailer license..I also obtained the passenger endorsement in the mid 70"s and again had to take a driver's test. The CDL didn't come along till the mid 80"s and went into law in 92 or so..I remember as all we had to do to get the CDL was take a written test at home and send it in and I worked with guys that still failed it..I did work with guys that never had to take the test and some of them showed it..

Back then, Yellow Freight had all of us tested together when we had to switch to a CDL, and we were required by them to get a FULL CDL, except passenger endorsement.

So anyone hired back around that time had it.....so 20 years into the future, those drivers will not be affected by this ruling, as we already have it.......KK
