O.k ladies & gents on the linehaul board i've pretty much seen it all as far as linehaul is concerned but here we go again getting slapped in freaking face again. I've been seeing sleeper contractors pull our pups & dollies like crazy across the i-80 lane. From p.a to iowa. Has anyone else caught eye of this? I seen hill bros this morning pulling a set. Some company called linehaul something or whatever too! I mean first it was the purchase cantractors with their own trailers pulling our freight but now this! Wtf! They'll always preach & use that excuse that there's a imbalance in that lane that they're using them in but in my opinion there should'nt be as many imbalanced lanes now like b4 due to the merger. I understand more customers are now shipping using the economy service more than priority unless u run out of a satellite terminal then most would be priority. From what i heard the ceo of our fedex freight division comes from either ground or express & that's all they've used or use in those div are contractors. So i guess they carry our vir booklet too for pre & post trip write ups!? Nice! So we have drivers on the low end of the board sitting at home struggling for work too! This company is getting too big that's why the union is after us. All i'm saying is that if the company keep on treating it's workers like crap you'll have a un-educated crowd that knows nothing about the union or the history of the union start firing up & raising eyebrows. I don't root for that organization but i don't want to get pulled in just because of a majority vote. We're the #1 non-union ltl company out.....those corporate geeks that've never drove a 5 axle in their life see #'s.....i see work being taken from us. Hell our mileage scale should be atleast be somewhere close up with ups's linehaul mileage drivers. This a multi-billion dollar company there's no union sucking us dry...so what's the excuse!? Hell if we got these sleeper trucks from national then why don't we use em for what their for. I'm just lost for words right now guys & a lil disappointed but it's not the first...........bleak future.

Corporate is, has been and always will be in control. We've seen it before, guys yelling "The British are coming", and in the end all is well. Give it time, it's only been about 3 months since the merger. The company still has a lot of wrinkles to iron out. We ran scared with purchase vans for years, yet the majority of us survived it and are still running freight. Don't despair, we'll be alright!!!

who are you kidding, i have told you guys to be ready to buy a truck, they are moving toward a total owner operation, just a matter of time, all big companies want to make money, remember you saw it here first

That's why they ran all the O/O off before the merge, huh.

FIRE...

1st, welcome to Truckingboards.

2nd, where have you been. Hills Bros has been pulling for National for a while now. The national Linehaul are Ex-National O/O that were forced to get their own authority. It's nothing new. They use the Contractors to fill in where company assets are thin. Do I like it? Nope. There's nothing we can do about it. Kicking and screaming here will just make you feel better, but the bottom line is FedEx is a for profit company. They will do anything to try to make a profit.

I talked to a guy last week that just got hired with Boomerang because they just signed a big new Contract to haul our freight from Carlisle PA to Dallas............... And back .......

This makes no sense. Unless its some truckload shipment or something. NHS and whatever freight is called now are 15 miles away from Carlisle and York is like 10. Why would they have something starting in Carlisle ?

They didn't run them off...FedEx had different requirements for any O/O hauling their freight after the merger.
Now you have to own at least 5 trucks and be an LLC...there were some other stipulations, as well.
Some didn't like it and left.

Purchased Transportation (PT) is often more expensive than using in-house drivers on a per-mile basis.
That's why it's cheaper for one-way freight and let the PT worry about the backhaul.

But actually contracting-out multiple routes/freight with multiple fleet owners (line & city) ala FedEx Ground is a whole different ballgame than using PT.
Whether we see something like this is not known at this point, but it would not surprise me in the future to see 80% fleet-owners and 20% company drivers.

One word. Unionize. Doesn't have to be the Teamsters, but a union nonetheless. We have too many drivers here that are only about themselves. Oh, until the day comes that they don't get what they want or a change was made and then they cry like babies. Even your fearless Truckingboards owner does his share of griping and then he wants to post a 'positive' thread about how great the company is now that he has a run that he likes. Don't hear much about the single seniority system from him nowadays but the minute GBO loses those runs he'd be the first to cry a company FOUL.
I've signed my card...have you?

You don't hear me griping, find a thread with me griping in it about something off the wall.... As far as the runs, we really don't have any bad ones where I am at, I prefer the ones that are shorter runs so the next time you feel the need to run those DSL's you may need to check your facts.

I have been for a single seniority board since day one and thats never going to change but what I am for and what actually happens are two different things...

Take your tired union arguments to the debate forum, that horse has been beaten to death here.

Not to intrude on your guys board, but I have been reading the thread and thought I could add something else for you guys to chew on. As your co-workers have said, PT is more expensive per mile. And they also have said its used in lanes with no back haul, which is all true.

I saw someone say that they should add a few more drivers. So now you have a lower cost per mile, however you have all of those deadhead miles back. If there isnt work, they are sitting at home :couch: or working the dock at a driver rate. The big thing that no one has touched on is benefits. When you add xtra drivers, you are covering their benefits regardless of what work they perform. I am guessing fed-ex is self insured like our company is, well at least they tell us here that all large companies are. This means that your health insurance is there to get the company discounts and handle the paperwork but the company eats all of the costs.

Dont bash me, :hide: but something to think about. The company pays more for using PT or the employee pays more for their weekly health insurance. Personally, I would be happy for the company to eat the costs! :soapbox:

What gets me is the Fremont IN to CMH purchase that happens every night. Why not add a 3 rd driver?

they had a third for a bid then took it back if you run freemont you will see alot of that freight comes out of chicago. It should be next day from cgt but cmh but cant run 624 milles safety department wont let us.

Chicago Heights isn't next day to Columbus, OH? Since when?

At the merge they closed sidney and aurora, ne and forced company drivers to either leave or move, but at least I know Hills bros is still using the sidney yard. Now they want to open Ogallala, ne, really come on what company driver is going to move up thier. So what is going to be thier compians like hills bros to run our frt

I've din IND to cgt to cmh didn't make it all the way home. Got close enough to be picked up though.

We did a test run CGT to CMH and driver did it with no problem. Central changed it to a meet but CMH didn't have enough drivers (something like that) so the meet drivers were going through and a few complained and laid down. There were a few that almost made it back but got picked up. Central saw this and wouldn't create a turn bid. We had most drivers make the turn w/o a hitch or extension but a few drivers screwed it up. We make birmingham meet at 642 miles but cant do 624. It is the same speed limit. It should be a bid turn and if you cant do it dont put name on it.
