UPS retaliating?

In Maspeth, NY, two weeks ago, UPS fired a driver and longtime union activist without the fair hearing he was entitled to. Outraged and aware that violating one worker's rights threatened them all, other drivers walked off of their job to stand in solidarity with their fellow worker.

UPS has told hundreds of drivers they are fired for protesting the termination of one of their fellow workers in NYC. Tell UPS it's the wrong turn for their employees, their customers and their brand.

UPS Drivers Fired for Protesting?? Story and Petition if anyone wants to participate.

Previous Story:
The UPS workers from Teamsters Local 804, a local led by rank-and-file reformers, called an impromptu wildcat action to fight back against the unjust firing of a driver and vocal Teamster fighter.

New York UPS workers strike to protest unjust firing

I think this case is turning into a staring contest between the company and the union and it doesn't help that parcel is still dealing with a number of local agreements that haven't been ratified yet. Could this be a sign of a larger strike by brown???

Is the company really this arrogant that they would escalate things while they still have local supplements out being negotiated??? Doesn't seem like a good move for them especial since there new contract doesnt take effect until all supplements are passed which IMO would mean that a nation wide strike is not out of the question. Will certainly be interesting to watch for sure.

I think with Obama destroying the country they feel they have a strong hand with fear tactics...

In the day such moves by the workers could solve problems but today it is not the case. If enough had walked out to cripple the company and force them to cave in to their demands the story might have a different ending. I wish them all the best and hope it goes their way but I don't have a good gut feeling on it. I suspect that UPS will be sending a message to any others who might want to try this in the future.

You might be right the day of the working man just accepting the crumbs from the table are upon us...

You know I wonder if that is what everyone thought in the beginning of the union movement many years ago. That you should just take what you are given and be happy about it. While I've been on both sides of the fence on the whole union thing I do believe that it has always been an up hill battle, but most of life is. We must fight for what we believe in and not cower to what someone in authority tells us. This goes for work and politics. Rather to die trying to make life better then to be the slaves of a master.

250 guys walked out because 1 guy was unjustly fired? Sounds like they have a real union up there in New York.

At my barn, 250 freight drivers would have been in the terminal managers office under his desk telling him why that driver deserved to be fired.

Isn't that the truth...:biglaugh:

The only ones who can be fired per the contract are the Stewards. It is legal to walk at anytime for ULP's.(unfair labor practices), As long as the local sticks to the reason for the walkout was ULP's then they will be on solid ground.

ULP strikes can be legitimate strikes. Has a ULP been filed? Under what circumstances is it ok to call a ULP strike?

Local 804 is a supporter if the tdu, Ron Carey was out of that local, it wouldn't surprise me if those guys were hung out to dry, but yeah that is what real teamsters look like.

There is a very large misconception that Ron Carey was in the TDU, He was not a member of the TDU. Since none of us actually know all the particulars on what happened in Maspeth, We should just take a wait and see approach.

I really hope they get their jobs back and that all sides think twice before acting out of anger.

UPS Executive Mark Kemper told the Daily News that the company is firing 250 drivers in New York because: "We believe that we owe it to our customers.” But UPS customers say the company owes them something else. The customers wants UPS to keep the drivers that have served them for years.

Customers Tell UPS, "Don't Fire My Driver!"
