Does anyone use a dash cam? If so, what brand, how much, and where did you get it? What is FedEx policy on this? I sure feel the need for one these days to protect myself.

we have company dash cams at Conway, I also bought one called the original dash cam for my own record. Works good, day or night.

I use one of the more expensive cameras, a GoPro Hero 3. The hero 3 has a looping feature that allows you to continually record on a preset loop in five minute increments. When you hit the stop button, it will save the last batch of 5 minute videos.

You might want to check the drivers manual, I think there is something in there about recording on company property. I still did it, when I worked there.

I saw some stuff Medic posted using a Sony, it was good video. Don't know the model number but he did post that as well.

I would have a hard time believing the company would fire you over a video camera that, in the event of an accident, could exonerate them. If they did the next employer would be easier to come by with no preventable on you.

Guardrail:

Great info on the GoPro Hero 3, but I have two questions.

1) If you get stopped by a total jerk state trooper, you may need more than 5 minutes worth of video in order to get the entire picture.

2) If you get in some big wreck and somehow you get knocked unconscious, how are you going to hit the stop button for the 5 minute loop.???

Thanks for all your great work here at TB. :notworthy:

You can choose the length of the loop from 5 minutes to 6 hours. It breaks the individual clips into 5 minute increments. As far as getting knocked out, that's the chance you take.

The reason for the loop is you can record high definition and not run out of room on your SD card. I record in 1080 wide and get great day and night video.

the Garmin DC-20 does 5 minute loops and in the event there is a crash, the file "locks" so it cannot be erased. a 32 gig stick lasts all day with no issues in 1080P resolution

and there is NO law(s) against dash cams, while out in the public, you have NO reasonable expectation(s) on privacy issues

Could implicate them just as well also.

I wondered if a driver could do this but I think it falls under the heading of modifying company equipment which is against company policy, like hooking CB antennas to the back of the truck, which is still done by some drivers. Hey more power to you if you can do it and get away with it.

I also use a gopro Hero 3 silver... I have a mount on my mirror bracket that I attach my camera to. I usually press record before I pull out of the gate and use it as I drive the LA freeways cause I have had some close calls. Once i get past LA freeway traffic I'll stop real quick and press the button to stop recording. I usually record about an hour of my run once I press record to when I stop recording. Plus with monsoon season coming up I'll get some great video of the storms! Once my day is done I'm able to connect my phone to the camera via Wifi and I can delete the video from the night I did. If i catch something good like a car almost taking me out or stupid things people do I usually go home and upload the video to my computer and cut out the segments that had interesting things and keep them!

So when are you going to post your own YouTube Channel here, so we can see those interesting videos.???
Just make a Socal_FedEx channel.

GoPro IPO: Should Investors Snap Up GPRO?

GoPro, the developer of the popular HD action-sports camera, plans to issue 17.8 million shares at a range of $21-$24. Assuming the deal gets done at the mid-point, the company will sport a valuation of about $3.4 billion.

So what should investors expect? Is this a deal to buy or avoid? To get a better sense, let’s take a look at the background of the GoPro IPO.

It will be interesting to see how high this stock goes on its first day of trading.
I will pass on this name because it does not pay a monthly dividend (or quarterly dividend).
