With the new Eden system will come electronic logs.We were told their coming and fast.It wont wont hinder long-haul drivers, but will hurt Shuttle drivers. What has everyone else heard. Some city drivers went to meetings told me they show the handheld the road drivers will be useing

Electronic logs were coming fast three years ago. If they are anywhere near what the city had they are better wheel blocks. I've talked to drivers at other companies that have them and they hate them. One told me he was in a traffic jam or something but he said it took him from driving to on duty even though he was moving.

I've been using E-logs for two years now and if anyone tried to make me go back to paper they'd be in for a fight!!It depends on the E-log set up but at OD if your speed is less than 15mph you are'nt considered to be driving according to the E-log

I hope that we end up with that system also. I think most people are a little scared of not being able to use the "Whiteout".

Funny I think it was an OD driver that told me that. It's been close to a year since I talked to him. Meet him in a cb shop got to talking because he was a mechanic in Texas for AF years ago.

We use PeopleNet for E-logs,dispatching,messages,etc and the E-log feature is quite brilliant you just input the equipment and manifest numbers and your off,I spend about 1/3 of the time with the E-log as I did with paper as for whiteout I havent missed it,I have a daily 650 mi bid and the 2or3 times I ran out of driving time and had to go to bed would have been so obvious I'd had to shut down using the paper. The dispatch system has the occasional melt down, but the E-logs have been faultless.

I worked for a company in Cincinnati named Saalfeld Paper. We had the cheap version of electronic logs (I forget the exact name, maybe TripMaster). I loved them. Couldn't cheat, if you ran out of hours, you called Cincy and told them you were getting a motel room. The best part was rolling through scales.
Over the loudspeaker "Driver, bring in your paperwork and logbook."
I would hold up the hand console that was wired into the dash, "Sir, I can't bring in the logbook, it's wired to the dash."
"That's your logbook?"
"Yes, sir."
"Never mind, keep rolling."

I worked for a company...Nickles Bakery,,,,as a shuttle driver and was inspected and they asked for my log...our system you had to type in the zip code where you were...( carried a zip code book with us ):2437: Officer asked for my log, handed him my handheld and said you have somethin to plug this into it'll print for ya...:nut_kick: and went marrily on my way:shift: Needless to say I'm gonna LOVE it:6799:

But can you get a copy of your log? We had an audit by the IRS and they wanted copies of our logs for a whole year. What would you do then?

From what I've been told. When you get back from your run you will plug it in and download the days log and print it off.

With the PeopleNet system OD uses we just get on any computer(even from home),go to their website, enter employee number and password and download logs and print them,In color even!or just ask your dispatcher to do it,when you log off the computer the logs from your tractors computer automatically get transfered to the companies dispatch system.

According to IRS rules all you need to show is that you were away from home. I used a calender and marked my days away on it , IRS had no problem with it. DESTROY your logs over 7 days they are a liability

IRS says to keep log books for 7 years.
no they don't, you have been listening To too many breakroom accountants. I can tell you from experience all that is required is a record that you were away from home. Like I said I use a calendar , when I got audited IRS had no problem with it and commented on the fact that it is what a lot of sales people do. keep your logs if you want but don,t try to BS everybody about IRS rules

That's pretty neat. Good info, thanks. I've got a old friend that pulls tanker for Kenan out of Chapel Hill N.C. They've been on electric logs for a couple of years now.
He's old school like me and hated it bad at first. But now that he's got used to it he likes it ok.

I can't think of the name of the system they use but there's a screen in the truck they log into and it's got alarms that go off if he gets close to a violation. I've been on the phone with him when it hollers at him and I used to laugh at him when he'd cuss it. But that was just in the beginning. Now he hardly ever mentions it.

It would be nice if it will tell us when were running out of time. It sucks having to stop and figure it up when you can't get it right in your head.

Yea sure would. I can think of some other reasons it'd be ok. I don't run illegal anymore and don't plan to do it again, so I say "bring it", I'll figure it out.

When in motion our computer screen always displays both driving and work time available on a constant countdown, plus average fuel mileage, also when your driving time reaches 1 hour available an icon pops up on the screen to remind you time is close, and at 5 and 1 minutes,no real alarm other than the"Law and Order"bong noise that the computer makes with every new incoming message there's also a volume control for that.
