Yellow | Considering YRC

Although I am a big fan of organized labor and Yellow being "union"(??), I would be very concerned about looking at Yellow as a place to retire. First, the Teamsters sold their soul to Yellow and I really don't see any chance for it being "redeemed". The company basically owns a share of the Teamsters and Jimmy Hoffa Jr. is nothing more than a puppet to Yellow. And really all this could be said for any trucking company that is Teamsters, Maybe the drivers at UPS might have a little more "leverage" but not much.

Going with Yellow, you will be working under a "hog board" and this is 99% of the union trucking companies. And this system in my opinion is very unfair. I believe in "first in, first out" dispatch system. I have a son who is working his 9th year with UPS and he is still "low man", UPS has not hired one person "off the street" since they hired my son. They have moved package drivers over to "feeder" but they have seniority over my boy. So, with almost 9 years, he still lives by the phone and takes the "left-overs".

This would be great info except one thing.
the post is about YRC

If I were you I would be looking somewhere else while you don't have no skin in the game here. Alot of us have too much skin in YRC to leave or better yet would like to see us leave. Someone has to be the thorn in their side for the atrocities this company has committed to the union workforce. Consider this if you like reality TV then look no further cause this is the place to be. Thanks for considering us we all appreciate it but it is a different time and place now. So get back on your bike and pedal like hell and don't look back....."Fugheddaboudit".:sadwavey:

Screwy Louiey, you stole most of my thunder.

I fought pretty hard to keep my P&D route when we first merged. My sole argument was SENIORITY. My route has a few bad stops but the good all outweigh the bad. I can get OT if I want, and I really don't have to kill myself.

I sometimes look at going to an earlier shift where 90% of the deliveries are either drop-and-hook or set with your feet up, but I say HELL NO. I fought with management for something, and I will be damned if I am giving it back. If/when I give it back, it will be on my terms, not theirs. I too feel that I am staying here just to be the thorn in their side.

This was to be my 30th year at the end of this month. I had my simple little plan all laid out on what I would be doing after I left. Now, thanks to the Union being in bed (and under the covers, I might add) with the Company, I am forced to work at least another 15 years (IF NOTHING ELSE CHANGES).

Am I bitter about all this? You DAMN right I am. I used to be proud to be a Teamster, these days I say it almost apologetically. Could I leave and start over somewhere else? Maybe, but I would give up a pretty easy route, 10 paid holidays, 5 (scratch that, 4) weeks vacation, 5 paid sick days, and my seniority. Anywhere else I went, I know it would be starting over, nights, weekends and left-overs that no one else wanted.

Would I start out at a company that is run like this? NOT NOW. This isn't the same place I started at in 1984. I know much has changed in our world since then, I get that. But I would recommend anyone else start somewhere else.

I have been asked 100's of times by the competition who see our NOW HIRING DRIVERS signs waiving: "What would I be doing if they hired me as a driver?" My reply is the same to all of them: If you went on the ROAD board, you MIGHT make 1-2 runs a week depending upon how much PTS is available. If they hired you as a CITY P&D driver, you would be driving on Monday with 15-20 stops. You would be working the dock BOTH weekend days, any combination of shifts. You might get a 3rd or 4th day, but it could be any of the 3 shifts we have, 00:01, 08:00, or !6;00. Most follow that reply with " Why would I want to give up what I got for that crap?" It is usually at this point where I remain SPEECHLESS.

Don't plan on raising a family with this company. They don't abide by any laws or agreements. At my terminal, they were using cartage to pick up hazardous shipments and neither the driver or their tiny company had a license to haul hazardous- material shipments. When asked about this, YRC dispatch said they didn't care because "IT WAS NOT ON THEM". If there is a problem with union rules, they will say "WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE IT THIS WAY" then they refuse to discuss the matter. They won't let anyone be tardy, but when you get to work they might not have a tractor for you to drive, and you might spend hours waiting for a truck to come into the yard. They don't discipline their supervisors either. One supervisor told me that he wanted a Hispanic barn, and I might not fit in (he wanted to talk Spanish to his workers). One time, he sent me out with a set. On my way back in, he gave me a pickup. I had to break down the set to make the pickup. Knowing how he was, I decided to back the set into the dock. It took me fifteen minutes. Right after I got it backed in, he cancelled the pickup for no reason. I just knew he was going to do that. Most of the drivers that apply are entry level drivers. Most of them do the job for a short time, and move on to a better job. One last thing, a customer told me a while back that he doesn't owe YRC anything. There was no reason to take 2 days to get a driver to his company to pick up one pallet. Sometimes people flag me down on the street because they want their freight picked up, and YRC dispatch doesn't care. If you take this job, learn all you can about LTL while there, and then hit the road for a better company, a company that doesn't hate people.

It is called Seniority, Everyone starts at the bottom and has to work their way up the board. Does not matter who's a__ you kiss if you don't have the time in you have to wait and babysit the phone.

Worst job I ever had, started in 2001 and got tired of getting screwed over. Left for non union carrier 4 months ago and am much happier. Stay away from this POS carrier, as soon as upper management gets done sucking money out of company it will be done.

Its called outside the red circle and pts then seniority. Tell the man the truth, he asked for it so give it. I started in 2002 good job then, quit recently. Thats as nice as i can put it.

WOW!!! And they put you through all that and probably did not pay you either$$$$$

I have never seen or even heard of a work environment where so many people hate there job. The average age of a YRC driver is 56 years old and are mostly all short-timers. I used to laugh at real 'company butt-kisser types' but where I work every single person hates it and thinks its a circus....even the supervisor. No company-men , just a bunch of people in a mad grab for themselves and I truthfully cant blame them.

Loyalty for the company (what was there at the time) was extinguished when the CEO told us two things:

If you vote no, then don't vote!
And
If you don't like it, LEAVE!

You are right. Morale is below zero. Only the comadre with our co workers and lower management make it worth it to go work..except for financial.

Thank you all. A lot of good information. I applied to some other carriers. I am going into the interview with a lot more knowledge than I had. God Bless You

Best of luck to you in your decision, the atmosphere is toxic with a sour workforce. Most people wanted to stay when there was pride here now it is about just show up and do my job and leave. Maybe and I do mean maybe this place does get itself together and becomes what it once was but I doubt it. Right now we're a turd in a punch bowl at a party.:17113:

I think many hang around because there main concern is supporting their families.
