Over the last several years, there were two things that I liked about the new pups that Saia had bought. One was the grease in the hubs instead of oil, and the other was valves in the air lines so that we didn't have to use glad hands to close off the airlines. Last night, I hooked a brand new pup, 289 something, and I couldn't believe that it was factory fitted to use glad hands to cut off the airlines. It still had it's original set but for how long, probably not very.

Save a buck here and a buck there, it adds up, the other thing is when someone breaks one, it is easier to fix at a terminal without a shop with a outside contractor.

What's funny is they said it saves $25 bucks per pup but the last batch has 3 chicken lights on the top rear the new batch with the glad hand stoppers has 5 lights on top guess they swapped the valves for the other 2 chicken lights lol

I guess with that extra power cord under the passenger seat I better put a set of glad hand closures... just staying I visit a lot of dark terminals

The problem is going to be at the HST shop or your TM . The HST shop used to make a pair,no problem, not now. it's going to take an act of Congress to get a set. As for locally, they'll tell you to go to HST because they don't want to spend the money or they will suggest you hook backwards and pull it to HST that way. The problems with this are a'comin, it's only a question of when.

They moved to using glad hands at Estes several years back, when people were not putting the valves in the off position.. Well, my advise to them was, "If they are not shutting the valves off, it's because they aren't doing a proper Pre-Trip and checking them. Glad hands won't help the problem if they continue to ignore the Pre-Trip portion".. I got told, "It just makes good sense for the glad hands"... "No dumbazz, it makes good sense to do a Pre-Trip. You could have saved thousands by making them do their jobs"....

I had a spare glad hand in my old 05. Had I known they were gonna buy this batch, I would have taken it out before it was sold

They have used the dummy glad hands at Con-way for years. Now last year they started getting pups with valves on them.

I personally like using dummy glad hands better. The valves are nice, but there's a chance that you may forget to turn them on when hooking. I've done it before, forgot to open the service side valve. I realized it the first time I hit the brakes, but it was a slip up just the same. With dummy glad hands there's no opportunity for error. Just my personal opinion.

I was told that it was done to stop all of the brake fires that we are having. I have met many relay drivers that have brought me sets with soft tires, some unbeliveable air leaks , valves not open or closed or only opened half way etc. the list goes on and on . All or most of this could be prevented by drivers doing a proper pre/post trip . We all make mistakes but I'm sure we can do better than what a lot of people are doing .

That is true. We all can do better, especially by not bringing crap to a meet site after leaving a yard with a big open tractor and trailer shop and making sure that the hazmat paperwork is right. I'm looking at you DLS.

Ouch!

As a rookie I have to ask, what's the protocol when your meet guy continually does this?

I think the dummy glad hands make it easier for the contractors. Especially when they hook their own sets. Solve 0ne problem, start another, now with the dummy glad hands at Estes if someone jack Knifes the gear (dolly) while backing they bend the service glad hand. As part of your Pre-Trip open the service line on the back trailer. If you still have a trolley valve. Saw a Schneider team in Vegas. No trolley valve. With doubles there is no way to do a Pre-Trip without one. Now the next problem: you take off the dummy glad hands at the back of the trailer to make sure you have air, good luck getting them back on without more air leaks. This was not a problem with valves. Thanks for letting me post here. No one has been posting on the Estes forum, too busy.
