ABF | New to ABF, happy to be here

I hope they know about that vacation :::shit::: and a new skeleton has come out of the closet whilst you were away. One now has to be on the seniority list on Jan 1 of any given year to receive any sick days for that year. This is a new one on all of us. Coincidentally it seems that hiring is frozen towards the end of the year but open up the flood gates come Jan 2. Go figure.

BTW you misspoke when you said :ranting2: I am a proud "no" voter.
Either wat concessions were given. That's nearly always a road to the end. I'm my 10 years here, it's only gotten worst year after year.

I resigned from YRC Freight. You may consider that a NO vote! When I was hired at ABF, I was looking for a better job - still am. Please let me know of the better companies there are to work for, I would like to get my app. in ASAP!

Crying? Just telling the truth. Do the news guys know about the concessions you voted for? No vacation for two years? Non union carriers making more than us? Congress going after our pensions?
You make it sound so much worse than it is. Just because it is raining does not mean the sky is falling or just because you get a late notice in the mail does not mean you are headed for bankruptcy. I find it humorous how fast people will predict the coming of the end.

I left holland back in May and never looked back. Best decision I think by far. Now if they would fix the vacation screw up they did I'd be in bullfrog heaven.
All they have to do is lay you off in the winter for the week you want off and just let unemployment take over paying you for the week. There are ways around the contract language. It will be impossible to get week back without whole rank and file paying a HEAVY PRICE! Good Luck.

Quick update... probation ends Tuesday, assuming I figured it properly... started January 19th and 30 days puts it at Feb. 17th. It has been fairly busy for this time of year and have only not worked 1 day since starting back in December, holidays aside. So far so good, no real drama yet other than a liftgate refusing to go up at times, a starter taking a dump and having to keep the truck running all day, and a radiator leaking. Starter was replaced on friday and hopefully the rad and liftgate are taken care of this weekend. I just hope the busy trend continues...

I'd rather the lift gate remain broken.....

What did the physical consists of. I just cleared my background check and I'm going for drug test and physical.

Straight forward DOT drug screen and physical. Didn't have to do any physical exercises like the YRC/Holland physical.

Thx. That's what I was wondering. That yrc fit for duty physical was extreme. And i did mine way back in 2000. I'm a little older now and don't move as easy like before. Wish me luck. I'll be going out of Los Angeles.

A quick question. Is ABF a hog board for the extra board?

Just started with ABF on December 18th as a casual City Driver/Checker. I got laid off from Holland at the beginning of November and applied to ABF for a casual opening. Took 6 or 7 weeks to go thru the background checks and the road test and physical but finally got the OK in December. I like working here and am glad to have gotten the opportunuity. Terminal manager asked me if I was interested in going FT and I told him I was. Kinda feels like a no brainer coming from a YRC owned company. I was disappointed about being laid off from Holland but now I feel like it was a blessing in disguise. In any event, I am happy to be here and look forward to learning the ABF ropes.
Amen to that. 02/17/15- Day number 1 for me. Hopefully, without being crude or offensive to anyone (especially after having just watched all the videos) : I'm happier than a puppy with two peters.

Really. I hope I'll never have to hear the "Disgruntled Donnies" like you can read about on almost any other LTL carrier here. Got a brother at YRC and he is NOT happy. Went ABF so I could avoid negative workplace. Then again I'm too new to really comment. Starting to get depressed just thinking that way. Plus yeah no vacation for me for the next two years. What's that all about. Only carrier I've talked to with that kind of policy. Only one.

In all seriousness you will find that in general drivers complain. I only complain when it's warranted, not a daily thing but there are many who that's what they do. It seems to be part of being a driver. When I went to day gig I asked permission of my fellow daytime comrades to be if it was OK for me to work that shift if I didn't complain all the time. No answer just a funny look.

Little quiet today so I am home. After the whiteout I drove into last night with a set, I can welcome the day off. The snow was coming down so hard and fast I got a little disoriented for a bit. 14 hour day with 360 P&D miles with snow and ice since a Sunday night storm and that squall I ran into last night...
