Yellow | Does Any One Like Working for Yellow?

This is the best job I have ever had. Sometimes being on the extra board at the bottom is agravting, but all in all it is better than anywhere else I have ever worked. There's been a few times work has been slow but for the most part at CGB we have stayed pretty busy.

I dont have an opinion because I never got started but I can echo some of your thoughts. I've spent 6 weeks on the linehaul extra board at CVE and still have not made my first run. The more I learn about the job, I'm not sure if I even want it. Why? Its the 24/7/365 thing. At 43 yrs old, living next to the phone isn't how I want to spend my next 20 yrs. I'm willing to start at the bottom but I thought "with seniority" would come a set schedule at some point. I like my weekends and want to know I can make plans without worrying about getting out of work. I didnt realize no one at CVE had set bids. Now I have a job offer from Conway. Same thing, first couple years suck, I know that. But they don't work weekends and have set starting times (not the flex board of course). At least thats what I was told. And no overnights in motels. Bad part is there's more dockwork involved. I was pretty excited when I got hired at Yellow. Now I'm not sure. The flex board at Conway is a wheel board so when it's slow at least you get something. Pay and bennies are pretty equal, teamster pension is better, I'm just not sure I can handle being on call until the day I retire. Is it really like that?

U should try UPS Freight I have a set start time and never work the dock

Buzz

P.S. Ran the Xtra Board at Yellow CGO 4 2 months.. the mis were fine but the 24/365 and the forced team dispatch to california sucked.

I'll be on the STL road board 20 years in July. I like it here as it's the best job you can have as a driver. I don't always agree with Yellow by any means, but in STL it's not bad at all. We have probably the best work rues around.
LazyLarry,
I never looked at like the work rules were screwing me when I was new. I understood why they were in place and knew in time it wouldn't be an issue as I got a little seniority. I think alot of new guys now expect that there's gonna be fulltime work right from the start, but we all know that's not likely in the LTL business. I agree with you that the jumpers will regret not sticking it out.

It used to bug me when they would lay me off with a run of freight left on the dock and the senior guys all working o.t. but I got to admit they still do the same stuff now when its slow except now I get the o.t. I hate to see some of these new guys come in and cry and moan and do a haf a@# job because there mad about about not working everyday. The quality of new drivers stinks. Nobody seems to care or want to pay there dues. Maybe it just me but thats what I see at our barn.

LL,
It's not just you and it's not just your barn. I get calls from guys complaining that it's slow and they're not working. When freight is better they call and complain that 3 hours after they went out some guy below them in seniority got out on a better run. And finally, when freight is booming and everybody is working all they want to, they'll call and complain that they're either working too much or that they're getting older trucks to drive. You're right, LL, the new guys want it all from day one.......not all of them, but quite a few.

Well, you "old guys" like to talk about your union "brothers". I don't know how things were in your house when you were growing up, but in our house nobody was allowed to ask for seconds (OT?) unless everybody had something to eat first.

I would be as embarrased to work OT with guys laid off as I would be to cross a picket line as a scab, but what do I know.

yo.....

if everyone posting here could count their own money as good as they count everyone else's, they wouldn't be working here and wall street would be much better off for having such highly astute prognosticators......

babysitting the phone is a part of our job description.........

i suggest learning how freight moves and keeping an eye on what loads go where instead of what driver goes where.......

it aint against the rules one bit to set yourself up to be available when the plum trips get cut off the dock and playing the game with skill is a lot better than whining about it........

Yellows is quite possibly the best I've ever had. But you have to remember that no matter how good you think a job is there is always and I do mean alway room for improvement. I think a lot of people feel the same here at Yellow. It's the only solid reason I can think of for the low turn over that Yellow has as well as Roadway and USF. And to Jake nobody can fault you for feeling the way you do that was a rotten experience. It's a shame that you weren't trying to get hired on at a diffrerent barn. No two barns are the same. Some barns have rules that protect against stuff like that.

Now, like I said, I kinda like it.........

BUT! One thing to remember about the new guys-- the bottom guys.....

20 years ago, when we started, it was alright to sit because the cost of living was relatively low; our jobs for the most part paid astromonically more than comparable ones. the difference wasn't even close. We had benefits that no one could dream of matching. Now, like it or not, most pay about the same if you hang in there long enough, except that the driver pays his own benes.........I wouldn't leave here-- I've got too much invested; but new guys coming on that have to sit see they could very well be making $$$$ at other places......many think it's not worth the "paying their dues"....I have to admit, if I was just starting, I'd be gone if I was at the bottom..........I'd make it on my own.

I guess that sums up where I'm at. 7th week on the extra board with not one call and 30-40 drivers ahead of me laid off. Thing is, even if it picks up this summer, its just going to happen again for 2-3 yrs. I start at Conway Monday. Essentially the same pay and benefits except the pension isnt as good. But they havn't had a layoff in 4 yrs. Perhaps Yellow could consider a modified board where say the top 70% operate on a hog board and the bottom 30% a wheel. This is similar to Conway's method. It might make it easier to retain new hires. Oh well, I'm sure they (and you senior drivers) could care less what I think. Hopefully I'll be happier ten years from now. I hate working weekends anyway so I was already reluctant about Yellow linehaul. At Conway weekends are volunteer basis plus they are home everyday, no motels, so its all good. I gotta do what I gotta do. I envy you guys at the top, but as Jimmy G says, I dont have to go thru this to get a very similar (admittedly slightly lesser) deal. Now I guess I should make a courtesy call to yellow and remove my name from the list. Not that they know who I am anyway.

Rev,
It's a shame that that's the way it happened. I can't imagine why the even did any hiring if there wasn't some work to warrant it. Aren't you the guy who quit the county job to come into freight?
Don't think that senior men don't care about the plight of the new guys....it's just that it's not in our hands....everything in the LTL sector depends on the amount of freight.
Best of luck at Conway. Although they might not have layoffs, freight levels will dictate the work you get there too. I recall lately that badlionsfan, a Conway guy from CVE, complaining that he was either not working or was getting called in for 4 hours on the dock only, even though he was hired as a roadman. He even talked about quitting....don't know if he ever did or not, though.
It's the nature of the beast at any LTL operation that the bottom gets the leftovers. It's fine when it's real busy and a pain in the butt when it's not. Again, best of luck to you.

No that wasnt me, I quit an OTR flatbed job. I remember him though, I think he stayed. I had to go to Central Transport:duh: for the last 5 weeks. I know Conway will be up and down too. Its OK though, as much as I wanted that teamster pension I really dont like working weekends! And skipping motels aint bad either. Those two things influenced my decision alot. I could still stay with Yellow if I wanted and would if Conway hadnt hired me. I'm disappointed about Yellow but excited about Conway. Ultimately I want a good LTL job for my last 20 yrs and I had two good options there. We cant predict the future of these friggin companies anyway.

I really don't know why but Yellow has always hired enough guys to try to be able to move the freight in the busiest of times. Other Union Carriers have pretty much hired enough for their regular workload. The end result is that at Yellow, when it's slow, guys starve......and at the others, when it's really busy, they struggle to move the freight in a timely manner. I know that in the day and age of guys not being able to afford to wait real long periods of time before they work good, at some point Yellow will have trouble finding anybody willing to take the chance, especially at 75%. It would sure help if the economy was better too.

PS stldude44,

I know some of you care I got PM's with support and concern.

JimmyG,

Your right, I didnt sit around whining and feeling sorry, I saw the writing on the wall and after one week at home I got a job at Central Transport and took my cell phone with me while I waited for the call that never came. Talk about a crap company! The difference in professionalism at Conway is like night and day. I read the complainers on the Conway board too but believe me, there are worse places to be. Some people always have to worry about who might have something better and forget about how good they have it themselves. No hard feeling towards Yellow or anyone else, I control my own fate in life! 10-4?

Well for starters the supervisor sets his staff of drivers not the other drivers. The company clearly earns more profit with less trucks and drivers on the road even if they have to pay overtime. Most of the time the senior guys get 'pissy' when they know they have to do the work of 1 1/2 men because someone is laid off. If your short on drivers and lots of unplanned pick-ups come in you have to get them. Thats why when there is a layoff the guys working always end up with extra hours. Sometimes 'unwanted' hours. Dont always assume the 'conspiracy' theory. There is usually not someone out to get you just because you got layed off.

It's the best job as far as working conditions go. Kinda slim on $$$ right now, but hopefully that will straighten out with time. I get to 100% in June, so that will help!!! Some guys retire and maybe I can buy that steak dinner I had my eye on :)

What I don't like is that we have no control whatsoever over our time, like waiting with the phone, not knowing when we get back (One bed? Two beds?), but I aint going anywhere.

Used to be Yellow Freight--now that it is YRC or more accurately Roadway 2 not a very good place at all--used to be great-even though the work was different you could have fun and still get the job done--changed though-they made a very droll repeatitive job even more droll and eliminated any possibility of being able to have fun. Now that the right to work state boys have oppressed us with their antique system it is even more stupid--no detrement intended to the teamsters themselves you are not at fault --you dont know any better

Boy when they call you a lurker they aren't kidding. You are the KING of lurkers. The last post on this thread was 5-20-2006. No offense, pal, but you need to get a life.

You folks who think YRC is so great never worked for a little outfit called
Consolidated Freightways. I'll take driving old junk equipment over working for this
mismanaged, treat the employee like dirt company anyday. I'm sure my CF brothers
would join me going back. There would be a line at the door waiting to get in.
If you did'nt work there, you don't know what I'm talking about
