1 dead after tractor-trailer crashes in Elizabeth, New Jersey; multiple cars hit

ELIZABETH, New Jersey (WABC) -- One person is dead and another in custody after a tractor-trailer crashed into several cars in Elizabeth.

Just after midnight Saturday, on Newark Avenue in Elizabeth, the truck started driving erratically, hitting cars in the area.

When police responded, they said they tried to box in the truck, but there was an exchange of gunfire, and the truck kept moving on Newark Avenue.

According to the Elizabeth Police Department, as it approached North Avenue, the truck slammed into a car leaving a supermarket parking lot. The passenger in that car was killed.

The truck eventually crashed into the facade of a building.

The truck driver was hit in the leg, and was taken into custody.

The Elizabeth Police Department and the Union County Prosecutor's Office are investigating.

Apostolic, I think he was intoxicated. I just posted an update about his arraignment. You're not going to believe what you read, I had a hard time on Facebook with it.
