We have a driver in CHS who has achieved 25 years safe driving. Awesome accomplishment IMO. He is being told he can;t get the trophy truck, dinner or check because about 8 years ago he was hooking up on the yard--landing gear got bound up, spun back and broke his wrist. he was out of work for a few weeks. but yet he is being recognized as a 25 year safe driver. when did having a problem on the yard start affecting your safe driving status. If you are on the ground, truck off and door locked how is that considered driving. Rules changing in the middle of the game again?
    any thoughts?

Well, for obvious reasons, but that’s really grasping for straws right there. If they want to spank his peepee for that, then they should have pulled his 25 year safety award. Can’t have it both ways IMO. If they give him a 25 year certificate, then they are obligated to go the distance on this.

My understanding on this is that due to the lost time (8 weeks), any and all safe driving award milestones are delayed an amount of time equal to the lost time. It is/was cumulative in my case. Around 4 weeks one time, 12 weeks the next. All of my awards are now "late", due to lost time. Fair enough, IMHO.

Having said all that, if he already got the award certificate, he has EARNED THE AWARD. It took me a month or two to get the dinner/check, and around 6 months to get the truck.

An award certificate with no award/reward makes no sense. :scratchhead:

    First off, I agree...it’s a great accomplishment!! :1036316054:
Now for the rest, it’s my understanding that 25 years safe driving is just that, regardless if it takes one 25 years or 35 years to achieve this feat...and as long as one doesn’t have an accident/incident within the last 5 years of reaching 25 (or 30 for their 2nd truck, etc) then a truck, dinner, check, or whatever else is accrued will be awarded. If one does have an accident/incident then their 25 year clock is “paused” and will resume after 1 year of the said date...which explains why it takes some 35 years to reach 25 safe driving.

I know you said “about 8 years ago” and I’m not saying you’re wrong on the dates, but something isn’t adding up...and as far as “having a problem on the yard affecting your driving status”, it’s always been that way to my knowledge. Drop a trailer, break a spot mirror, tear your rotator cuff while cranking the landing gear, have a heart attack while cranking the landing gear, etc will all cause your 25 year counter to be delayed for one year.

I’d also recommend you or the driver in question contacting your RDA on the matter :1036316054:

sounds good but this driver is only a few years away from retirement and doesnt like to stir the pot. He is pissed over this and has been in contact with thomas, charlie and a few higher ups. losing effort. and the RDA? do we have one?

Personally, I would not stop until the chain of command has been exhausted. None listed have the final word. Not even close.

Doak Slay, then John Smith. Both pretty reasonable guys who can get to the bottom of it. Their contact info in readily available on the intranet.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Sorry, but in my experience the chain of command is a waste of time beyond that of HR.

Award trucks (Master President Safety Award) have TWO criteria for achievement. The first is 25 years of safe driving. The second (and at times more difficult) is to have earned the President's safety team award. To earn the award, one must have 10 consecutive years of preventable accident AND injury free service. Recipients of this award get a leather jacket, certificate and a trophy (kind of a glass hologram of a truck). The program has had this criteria as long as i can remember.......

I'm guessing the heart attack might cost more than a year... :poke:
The only driver I know that had one, never came back. Is it possible to even come back?

This doesn't make sense to me. 25 years safe driving is just that 25 years in a row. Seems like any incident should reset the clock to zero be it a moving violation or yard accident.

It sure seems the name calling is getting a bit over the top on this forum as of late.

It depends on the severity. I know a few who've returned.

Luckily I’ve never had one but I’m thinking the last guy that did was only out for the required 90 days before he returned to work. Not sure how long he was out after his 2nd one though....
