This part I agree with, since I’m for the Fair Tax or Flat Tax, whichever we could get to eliminate the Progressive Tax and the IRS. Tariffs worked as long as the USA had no Welfare type Programs, and virtually no income tax. The USA can’t function with both high taxation, and high tariffs.
(From your article)
Third, he would use the bountiful proceeds from tariffs to abolish the IRS and enact a flat tax or national sales tax. Fourth, he would halt illegal immigration and reduce the quotas for legal entry. Under this plan, he promises, the trade deficit would disappear, American vulnerability to global financial turmoil would be reduced, corrupt foreign influence on our politics would abate, U.S. corporations would rush to build plants at home, millions of young people would find jobs, thus relieving social pathologies (crime, drugs) borne of indigence, and taxes would fall for all Americans.
I still believe that Protectionists came out of the Populist Party, which failed in the 1892 and 1896 elections. Pat’s article pointed to Cordell Hull, FDR, and Woodrow Wilson- all were Progressive, slow to change, Communists, and Nothing to do with TRUE Free Trade. I still maintain that, since WWII, Protectionists have been Democrat Union Workers, and absolutely not the Republican Party. Tariffs and Huge Government are why I call Trump Democrat Donald. I like how he has governed (so far), but he is not for small, low spending governance, as I like, by any notion.
