ABF | "because Freight Stinks!"

I got my start in trucking about mid 1963.
I was only 17 just quit school to start making my fortune.
The first union LTL trucking job I got was running a city route for Eazor Express.
They are long gone out of business a victume of the discounting started by the big three after deregulation.

I worked for 11 union companies from 1966 to 1986,when I ran out of fultime union work.
Now out of all those union companies I worked at only Yellow is still in business.
The rest of them all stated the same reason for closing their doors.
Poor Management.
I got hired fultime at Overnite in 1986,now we are UPS Freight, and I plan on retiring in the spring of 2008.

If I could of found a union company that was going to stay in business I would of had my 30 years of union credit by 1997.
But thats Life in the fast lane.

Back in the days when a lot of union LTL's were going belly up,the Teamster labor pool was flooded with drivers trying to get on with the remaining union companies.
So at that time Yellow would use me for a casual, but told me I had no hope of getting on fultime with them.

So here I am working into my 27th year total of non-union driving 1963 to 1966,And 1986 to the present, with just over 20 years union 1966 to 1986.

Its been a good run,but I've yet to of made my fortune, like I thought I would after quiting school.

Apostolic, I thought I'd being doing this 6 mos. or so.

18 yrs. so far, glad I wisened up in 2000 and found a union gig. Too bad I'm laid off right now.

Least I have my good looks...youth...I can't remember, my mind is going...

Apostostic, I don't know how many of those 11 jobs were in the same local, but fortunatelly for you the Teamsters union has the Multi Employers Pension Fund. Without it your pension time probably would not have been vested in most of those jobs.

Congratulations on 44 years of driving up in snow country. That in itself is something to be proud of.

I've been totally blessed by God to of had all of my Teamster, and non-union working years right around where I live.
I've always been able to be a city driver, with some dock work as well.
Never any linehaul, except for a very few special weekend trips filling in for vacations.

Its been a great career,I'm still going to drive when I retire this coming March.
I'm changing careers in that I'm going to be driving a school bus for my local school district.

I will be collecting the small union pension with my 20.2 years of credit.
Sorry to say it was all from the early years.
I'm also going to be getting a pension I've earned for my nearly 22 years of credit with Overnite/UPS Freight.
I plan on leaving my social security ride, untill such time as I get sick of being a bus driver.

I'd stick with trucking, but I just can't handle working with the high demands of UPS.

If you had put 40 years in the Teamsters that would have been enough that you wouldn't be working as driver. When we retire from trucking we live longer by having hobby's or part time work. Good luck and sorry to see that it was not all in one pension program. Differant company 401k is were the next generation of employee's are going to see in the future. Company's get away from long term vacation and sick leave, lower pay to start. Good luck Apo.

Yeah I think alot of guys here in Chicago ABF are looking at the same thing there mister. I will go for another 4 months and have the minimum to hold my pension, and I am going to get out as well. This freight business just isnt the same as it was back when I got started in the 70's. The continual beatings from his royal haenous the King of Blinker, have taken a toll on the pawns and we are tired. He's teaching us he will prevail, with his company man written work rules, written by the company men, for the company. If you have any questions, call Rotten or Blaznee. These *** cracks wrote them and now we are in the dungeon paying for their sins. Not to worry though, come cantract time, these work rules will be a changin. This time to protect us, not the King or his merry gay men. Hear that mack?

Apostolic, best wishes my friend. Enjoy your days. You've worked hard for the time off. Enjoy it while your health is good. If you make it to Chicago find me. A Day in Chicago is on me. I will escort you and your crew on a tour worth ten times it weight in gold.
Cheers.
