Anybody know how or if it is possible for UPS Freight to make the road and city boards all the same when it comes to bidding on runs. They told us in a meeting that road could bid into the city and the reverse. I don't think they can do this.

You can bid on any avalible job. wether or not you have the job seniority to obtain it is another thing.

Article 5 section 1 subsection (d)

(d). For full-time employees there shall be two seniority lists, “local cartage” and “over-the road.” There shall also be a separate “casual local cartage” seniority list. Employees in the following classifications shall be included on the local cartage seniority list: all truck drivers, helpers, dock workers, jockeys, and such other employees as may be presently or hereafter represented by the Union, engaged in local pickup, delivery, and assembling of freight. The “over-the-road” seniority list shall include all over-the-road drivers whose primary job is to transport freight between the Employer’s facilities. Nothing within this paragraph shall preclude the Company from requesting a road driver to make extra stops to pick up or deliver freight in connection with his regular run or performing other local cartage work as the Company may assign. It is not the intent of the Company that this provision be utilized to diminish cartage employees’ work.

This is under the Seniority section.

How when the 2 side have differant pay scale? Also how would the company do vacation scheduels when you could run the road for 6 months and then the city for the nxt 6?

If this is a real quote of the contract then you have 3 seniority lists not 1.

Thanks sppollock. I just had a look at local 728 63 page contract. That answers my question. My boss is not quite understanding what he is reading. No big surprise here.

And so starts the war....No it means this ....No it means this.....It is going to take some time to get it thru their head they hace to read the thing....Cause you know we would never try to pull a fast one......

Well we all have to be sharper and pay attention to the details. Unlike the UPS Freight hand book there is little if any grey area in a contract.

Hope I'm wrong, but the way I read it, If a Dock worker with 25 years and CDL decides he wants a city driver job, if a spot comes available,he moves in for a probationary period of 90 days, if he proves himself , he will immediatly go to the top of the seniority list and bump a guy with 24 years, Job seniority wont matter, company seniority will rule, and this can be ANY job classification senerio. Can anyone verify?

I am not interpreting it that way. probationary period only pertains to new employees. Section #5 Probationary Employees

There will be only one list for local cartage employees. This will include city, dock, and jockeys.
