Never heard of road driver's working freight..Now,some term's city driver's do work the dock..The big term's"breakbulk term's"...City driver's do not work freight unless they ask you to if they are short hand'd on the dock that day..Big term's like Greensboro..City driver's drive only..They have local dock guy's who load out the trailer's.Then breakbulk dock worker's unload trailer's in the evening..
we have combo drivers here in ORL that help the outbound dock when they arrive to start and then run their relays and then help the inbound dock when they return (if needed). relay runs 2-4 hrs each way so there is little chance of them running out of hours. I am told it works well here but will probably suffer if the freight drops
We have 2 road drivers that work the ob dock at my center, but it is their choice for extra $$$ and aren't forced. Also, we have our cluster operation were a road driver will drive to a mini hub operation and exchange freight with other local center's driver's. Their again, this is a bid run and not forced. This is a common practice among ltl's, union and non to make service on next day lanes.
