i was topping a grade and up shifting through the gears and missed 10th gear with over 40 k. before i knew it i was up past 62. the engine dropped to 700 rpm and i couldn't get it back in any gear. i put on the brakes to slow it down and then the engine speed came back up with my foot on the throttle.
after i experienced this i tried to experiment a little if i could keep up engine speed by running up to 65 on the short downgrades and taking it out of gear. when engine speed dropped to 700 i put my foot on gas and then brake at the same time and the engine speed came up to where i could get it back in gear.

i know the detroits don't do this, at least not the orange and blue i tried today.
anyone else have any takes on this?

Any engine taken out of gear will most likely return to idle speed (600-700 rpm) unless your foot is on the accelerator. This goes for uphill, downhill or sideways. Down hill you are gaining speed from gravity. If you exceed the engine speed, you will need to slow down the truck before you can get it back in gear.

i get your point but the engine will not come back on line until the speed reaches the governor limit. even if your foot is on the throttle the engine is still at idle above the trucks governed speed
try this sometime with the new blues.

I haven't noticed that scenario, but I would assume it's because the computer will not allow the engine to reengage at the higher truck speed to save the engine from over revving and blowing. I think it is more of a safety feature than a defect.

At the Yellow side, we have an older Volvo someone reworked the cruise on. Its wonderful to hit a hill with. When you push the clutch in, to down shift, the cruise doesn't release and the RPM max's out. You then need to hit the brake, re-rev the engine to re-sync and then put into a lower gear. Its a blast to drive during the "we hours". By the time you have it happen again, you've forgotten it does it, LOL.

Why are you putting into Georgia Overdrive in the first place?

You know that the computer logs this. if you were involved in a accident they could comeback after you for this.

The computers are set to go back to idle speed once out of gear. I bet the minute you go past the MPH over the RPM limiter you can not get it back into gear.

This is the reason why some of these trucks are set this way to prevent guys like you from destroying the engines.

Bingo!

Out here in sunny California its a traffic ticket by DOT CHP if you get caught running in what we call the "Mexican Overdrive" gear.:biglaugh:

Driver, I think I know what your talking about. Sometimes you actually have to shut them off to let it reset. Letting it fall below the governed speed does not always work. You can shut down while in motion, but make sure its on a straight away with no one next to you. It has to completely shut down though.

Well, I don't know about you, but sometimes I'm going thru the motions and forget I reached the last gear and go for a 11th gear. It happens.

hummmm
do i detect a flame war where i was trying to be constructive?
first of all it is my job to know my equipment. and it is yours to read the post in proper manner and please reread post 1 and digest at least a grain full of the content.
the old story again like ch 19. and you are obviously the epitimy of the channel 19 crowd.
i am sorry to the other posters for this guy must be a clown.:chairshot:

unlike many of the city guys my run takes me up to legal speeds of 65 and 70 and my engine is never out of gear except when i needed to know what to do in a case like this.

sleepers

I've heard if u can figure out the password in the truck computer menus you can turn the speed up. So far I can't figure it out on these sleepers. Sure would be nice. They got some guy running a bid in Salt Lake and his truck does 75mph. That would be plenty for me.

You'll get caught though, the puter logs when something is changed.
