Holland | Full Rate or lock the gate

Great choice! Good luck with upcoming contract.I know that 1 week vacation for the first 8 years will be out the window. It kept some of our guys from going there.
Ya, I had a buddy come from Holland a couple years ago to the road. Pretty exhausting especially the first year. You don’t pick up sick leave tell the 1st of January. He was pretty tired of being there. He had three weeks at Holland. Had to be tough to give up.

We had one leave for the road also.He stayed for about 2/12 years for pension. He said he waited 2 years to get a weeks vacation but didn’t mind because of the full pension contributions. Honestly,I don’t know how ABF pays full health and welfare and survives.
They are probably paying at least $450.00 to 500.00 per week per employee more than any non union. They must be doing something right. We wouldn’t make it a year.
I’m curious as to what O.D and Fed ex would be operating at if they had to contribute 22,000 or more per year per employee.I bet it wouldn’t be any better than ABF..maybe worse.

Nice slogan, must be ready to draw social security...and the ignorance continues.

Why do the Teamsters' union lose so many members? Very simply: Many of the companies the union has unionized cannot compete in a competitive market.

Take, for example, the trucking industry. In 1980, the United States Congress passed the Motor Carrier Act, which was signed into law by Democrat President Jimmy Carter.

The Motor Carrier Act deregulated interstate trucking. Government control of the trucking industry stopped and non-union competition increased. Price fixing went the way of the dinosaurs.

Deregulation of the trucking industry brought more competition because the costly process of government control of competition was eliminated. Most of the major union carriers in business prior to 1980 were not able to adapt to changes in the marketplace brought on by deregulation. Consequently, most major union carriers have gone out of business.

Below is a partial listing of Teamsters-represented companies that have gone out of business.

And #138 YRCW , 2019 rip

I’ll be happy for you.I know you will be happier working non union and I’ll bet you look good in a uniform.
Careersite_ABF_2.jpg
Uniforms show pride in the company and YRCW is the only one that doesn't have a uniform because they is no pride at any of yrcw companies ,we are a bottom feeder company now !!! and pay the rate or lock the gate ..........................

I wore a uniform for almost twenty years and those shirts are not bad but those pants suck! Big time! I would rather sign another MOU than wear those pants again! (Slight exaggeration to make my point).

For those of you that say Pay the rate or lock the gate. There is no way they are going back to full scale. We barely made money last quarter with the 15% giveback. Just not going to happen. They need to rethink all of this to successful. We can't hire anyone decent anymore because our hourly wage is so much lower than everyone else. Also new hires basically won't have a retirement. So we basically get the guys that are worthless and need the union to protect their jobs because they would never make it in a non-union setting. Keep hiring useless people at the same wage as 20-30 year vets is not going to work in the long haul. It's such a sad state we are in right now.

When you pay 3 or 4 thousand dollars out of pocket each year along with your monthly payments for insurance I hope you don’t bitch. When you get laid off with people under you still working please make sure to get on forums and tell us about it.( I know 2 major LTL’s that do it)
In all honesty I don’t have a problem with uniforms, but I do hope you realize you will be a yes man at your new job. They aren’t gonna put up with a bunch of whining.
Unless you get on with Fedex you can kiss time and a half goodbye then you will realize with the overtime you are making close to the same thing with free insurance at your bottom feeder company.

My favorite new hire story: I come in on Saturday evening and as you look down the row of trailers, three quarters of the way down there is a trailer sticking eight feet out farther than any of the others, now if a guy had hit a bump in the ground and thought it was the dock I could understand but because I have spent a few hundred Saturdays there I know that three quarters of the way down is a dock that has a dumpster in front of the dock to throw all the garbage into. Yes the newbie had that dumpster pinned nice and tight between the trailer and the dock plate and driven away to go fuel with the trailer sticking eight feet farther out than any of the others. He will fit right in with the other new hires around here! Kind of scary!

Insurance is NOT FREE, right now at Holland I pay -15% weekly for it , which is $180 - $225 Bucks a week with -15% givebacks for Insurance ,so do the other LTL pay that much a week for Health Insurance ? and then they are only paying in 25% to pension !! Sorry it time for them to pay up $$$$$

I agree with you, but, the bottom feeder still has to have the gate unlocked for your post to be accurate and lately I wonder if they can keep it going. I know they had a lot of expenses in the fourth quarter but those numbers really sucked and in the last couple weeks the bottom has just dropped out of the freight. At my barn we went from twenty some no powers every night to not clearing the board. Kind of scary! (I think I'll just end ever post I put on here with the saying "kind of scary"!)

Useless is pretty much what's left to hire nowadays. And most of them think 22.bucks an hour is over the moon. Besides, they already
save $54.00 bucks a month not paying those union dues, and they can apply that to the $200.00 a week that hawkins will say is the "take it
or leave it" amount for the health care. Don't get me started on the pension. I have so much respect for the guys who took on the pension
fight, but there is no way this administration is going to prop up any "communistic socialist YOONYUN with what they say is a taxpayer bailout.
(Sorry wrong thread for the pension stuff.)
I know there is more to the pension fight than I can say here. There are a lot of good comments here, and even when we don't agree
we all have a lot in common. The next year is going to be tough, with anything we have to say being branded fake news. It's too bad we can't educate the public about what is at stake here, but that ship sailed long ago. I know yrc has a plan b and the press releases about the union destroying this once great company are already written. I wonder how many guys will stay at the new yrc when its a non. I won't. I have a plan B and C

Maybe it's time to shoot the horse.

That's the whole problem right there. Holland has hired to many idiots in the last 5years. They hired guys that aren't worth 15 bucks an hour let alone 25 something if we where at full scale.

Think you're wrong, he was hiding that dumpster from you guys so he could look through it after he got off from work.

It’s the same at New Penn and Yellow. You get what you pay for. Want better employees who will actually take the time to do it right ? ( meaning labor and Suervisors) Then they have to become competitive with the pay, we always had the best employees and the cost was a good hourly pay rate, healthcare and a pension contribution. Everyone talks about non union companies making money and doing well vs. the Union companies. ABF and UPS still make money New Penn and Holland still make some money they made more before the MOU than they do now.
Notice whenever they put out earnings statements they never mention how much was given back on freight claims and accidents ? I guarantee you those figures have skyrocketed since New Penn and Holland have to follow the Yellow “ one more skid” plan of how to load a trailer.

One of the big problems that happened when yellow first bought us was running out all the good holland management. Us drivers all talk about more pay for ourselves but the lower tier management is in the same boat. So all the good ones end up at our competitors and we are left with the dumbest management in all of ltl. We used to hire the best drivers and management because of the pay. Now both are bottom of barrel. Customers used to use us because we were the quickest and damage free carrier. Now we are so screwed up we have embargos. Can you imagine an embargo 15 years ago. Never would have happened. Also we were high on our rates back then but customers used us because we were the best. Those days are long gone.

Not being a smart ass here but am wondering if some would prefer 27/ hour with much less benefits. A 60 hour check would be almost §1900 (1890 to be exact)
If we only averaged 50 hours per week we would be making 77,000/ year in city.
The hard hitters would be pulling in 85,000 to 90,000.
If we could negotiate our pension payments into an escrow account with our name on it until they figure out what they are going to do on our behalf besides throwing our money out the window for someone else to grab and no one to throw any back in the window for us I’m all for it.(app 3500 per year at 25%.) 10 years is enough donations)
How many cents per mile would it take you line haul guys to get the equivalent of a 5 dollar per hour raise? Where are you at now or this April.
