I picked up a Branch truck at their auction in January 1985 in Providence, RI and drove it back to Atlanta. I stopped in Pennsauken, NJ to fuel up. It was 40 below zero in RI that morning and had warmed up to 25 below zero in the picture. When I got to Atlanta it was 12 below zero. Coldest day on record at that time in Atlanta.

Our business agent was from Branch in the mid 2000's.
He went from Branch to New Penn and became road Steward. And then on to Business Agent
I suppose he worked in a Reading terminal.

Saw triaxle ABF van on Maine Pike. Knew their Portland Me TM who said they were dedicated to hauling the rolls used on paper machines.

Many years ago Branch handled these from Newton Mass to direct points. Had to be an opentop trailer to crane load, with portable (Preco ?) heaters in the winter to keep the steel in the roller from freezing.

I know Red Star and CF used the wide and long trailers.
And CF used doubles.

Were the doubles 96 wide or always 102 wide.
I think they are all 102 now.
Just asking. But do you lose sleep fretting over trailers 102” wide?

Nope.
Did you ask them anxiously when you can haul a 70' that's 104 wide?
That concerns me more

When guys just think it's great.
I do not worry about trailer length or width. If I feel I cannot get to a delivery safely, i call in and tell them that, and bring it back to the terminal. They know I will at least attempt delivery, and trust my judgement that I am not just trying to get out of doing it.

And when you can't make it....you have to move that junk around all day.

Better to go out with something you can make it with.

But it all pays the same...hauling a big stupid trailer where they make more money at your expense if pulling it around...and moving it around.

I'd rather have the all-pays-the-same job of smaller, narrower and shorter trailers...and not have to do anymore....for the same pay

Well, there are truck drivers, and then there are truck drivers.

Well, there are truck drivers, and then there are truck drivers.
And there's paychecks and then there's employee of the month awards.
And those pleasing the company, running instead of walking....go out injured for the big bucks retirement.
It all pays the same.

I'll take the easy stuff, if you don't mind.

It must be very different doing P&D in the congestion of the Northeast. It is very common to do routes with 53’s in the Midwest
