I heard that under Bernie Sanders Medicare for All plan, he would force companies to pay to employees salary what they were paying towards healthcare plans. That would be a huge pay increase.

That plan won't pay for itself. The money will come from somewhere and you can bet it will be from the working class, not the mega-rich or the non-working it will be square on our backs. Typical election B S to attract votes from the "what ya gonna do for me" voters..

My big question to universal healthcare, $15-$20 minimum wage & the like is: Where does that leave folks like us? Health benefits have always been part of total compensation for good jobs. $15/hour for entry level jobs? Add these two together and we’re worth what? $50/hour? $70/hour? The economy, etc would remain the same. Increased costs=increased “retail” across the board, all products & services.

50 bucks an hour sounds about right

My question is, if everybody has access to all of the same services, why do those that make more have to pay more? If the only answer you have is “ because they can afford it” don’t bother to answer.

I actually favor a public option. If you prefer your private insurance, pay for it and keep it. Or let your company pay for it and keep it. Everyone else gets Medicare type coverage. As far as how it will be paid for, check out the link I posted previously and it explains in detail the options for funding this plan. It's a fact that companies, XPO in particular pays about $400 dollars per week per employee for our health care coverage. That's 20K per year per employee. Their contribution to Medicare for all will be far less than that , with the potential of putting some of their savings into better salaries for us. It could happen, especially if other companies lead the way. They'll have to remain competitive. Just remember that private insurance operates on a 25% to 30% administrative cost. That's for executive salaries, building maintenance, private jets, employees salaries, Tv advertising etc. It cost a lot of money to run a private insurance company. Medicare operates on a 2% to 3% administrative cost. Since Americans spend over 6 billion dollars a year on health care and administrative costs can be reduced by around 25%...That's a 1.5 BILLION dollars savings right off the bat. That makes everybody's health care cheaper. The rest of us all pay the same rate into the plan. Anyone on Medicare now, already pays 134.00 per month in premium. Whatever percentage is decided upon will be deducted from everyone's paycheck equally, so the more you make, the more you pay. Younger folks, of course, will pay in more than they take out in medical care. However, we all get old and sooner or later, we'll need alot more medical care than when we were younger. Wouldn't it be nice to go to any doctor anywhere in this country, get treatment for whatever, and pay absolutely nothing. No premiums, no co pay, no deductible, no out of pocket, no pre existing conditions , no excuses. You're covered. It happens every day, all over the civilized world. We're the greatest country on earth. Why can't we do what everyone else can do?

Remember that the company pays the equivalent of $400.00 per week per employee for the Cigna coverage that we have now. All insurance is good...until you have to use it. Our Cigna plan is garbage. If Universal single payer were adopted, there would be mandatory contributions from every company, HOWEVER, those contributions would be far less than the $400.00 they are paying now. And they would no longer have to pay that $400.00 per man per week. A smart company would share a part of their good fortune with their employees and we would all get a raise in salary. Don't laugh...it could happen. All of our taxes would rise minimally, but just think about medical coverage with no premiums, no co pays, no deductibles, no out of pocket, no lifetime limits, no pre existing conditions, no nothing. Just good health...

The 134 dollar Medicare premium is for 1 person, so a family of 4 would have a 536 dollar premium.
why Should you pay based on your income? Just because I make more money than you I should have to pay more for the same services you get?

While it all sounds good in theory I just don't see how it can work to the benefit of the working class. The wealthy will always have access to the best possible health care, the best Doctors and medical centers will go pay as you go, in other words cash on delivery, it is already happening, Drs. offices posting "not accepting medicare patients at this time", hospitals posting "If you are not covered by Health insurance we have an obligation to stabilize you and transport you to an outside facility". The poor will get treated eventually as most have no assets to lien against. If this is to happen it will take a major shift in American healthcare. The drug companies are ****** the people, my wife's' life dependent insulin has tripled in cost in the last few years, in Europe it is about 30% of what it costs here. The med. centers have become palaces, marble, granite, glass, I walked into a recently "renovated" hospital near here and the lobby alone was fit for royalty, that had to be paid by patients and insurance companies. The Government is notoriously bad in managing anything, ask someone who uses a VA hospital, poor or no care, long waits for appointments, staff frustrated by what they can't do. You can bet on having cost factor in to your treatment, will they give expensive treatment to a smoker, overweight, elderly, or decide if you make an attempt to live or too costly? I have friends in Ireland and Germany they may wait months for Drs. appointments, and if it is a specialist many more. My Irish friends recently brought their daughter to the U S for treatment and paid for it!!!! While our system is flawed, it is still the best in the world as to access and treatment. Careful what you wish for. Remember Obamacare, "if you like your Dr., you can keep your Dr.". The percentage of the U S GDP is roughly 17% spent on healthcare that sector won't go down without a fight. Next time you get a statement from the Ins. Co. look at the billed amount vs. the paid amount, shocking to me sometimes. Once again while it seems like a good idea it will take a major shift in the Medical business and will take time. In my personal experience all I can say is "Thank you Teamcare...

Have you ever used a VA hospital? Most (except those in outlying areas) are affiliated with universities with some the best medical care you can get. I don't need approval for an xray, cat scan, MRI or another procedure. I have other insurance I can use but the wait times for approval for everythinf sucks. If my doc say get a cat scan and come back,I go downstairs and cat scan 45 minutes later I'm back in his office, can you do that?

Medicare only covers each individual over 65 years old. If you are 65 and have a wife and 2 kids, unfortunately, they are on their own. You would need a separate plan for your family. Under single payer medicare for all, everyone is covered. No co pays, no deductible, no out of pocket and no pre existing conditions. The beauty of medicare for all is that people actually go to the doctor at the FIRST sign of trouble. Medicine becomes more preventative and less curative. As a result, people stay healthier and catch issues BEFORE they become serious. That alone saves a small fortune in healthcare costs.

I don't know what the percentage of your earnings would be, so it's difficult to say how much more someone making more money would pay. There are so many different ways to fund this plan, it's also hard to say how much it would cost individuals or families. However, think of an XPO employee with a family of 4 paying 100.00 to 125.00 a week in premiums. In addition, God forbid some one gets sick. The deductibles and co pays could add up to 8,000.00 per individual per year. I would bet my life that his premium for medicare for all would be a bargain. I believe that if I make more and have to pay a little more, well, that's the price I am willing to pay if it's going to help a single young mother or a struggling family get a little peace in their lives.

I think what proponents of Medicare for all are doing is trying to take the positive aspects of what other countries have and come up with something better. It's complicated, for sure. Americans spend more per capita on health care than any other country. The best doctors and hospitals will always be available to those who can PAY! The rest of us, both poor and middle class will have to survive on what ever care might be available based on the doctors and hospitals included in our plans.

I have waited several weeks for a doctors appointment here in Miami. I agree with most of what you have said. We do have the some of the best treatment options available, however, those options are not always readily available to everyone. I am considering permanent dentures, as my mouth is a train wreck. The procedure here would cost me 25K to 30K, something I can't afford to pay. I can book a one week vacation, all inclusive in Cancun, Mexico. They perform the procedure on your first day and you get 6 days, all inclusive vacation at a 5 star resort on the beach. The cost for everything is 7,000.00. I know 3 people who have had it done with absolutely no issues at all. We doing something wrong in this country. The cost of prescription drugs is obscene, when you see what people pay in other countries. There must be a better way. Most first world civilized countries have adopted single payer in one form or another. All have some level of inconvenience, as we do here. ALL emergencies get immediate treatment in all cases. I have read that almost half of all bankruptcies here in the United States are a direct result of traumatic medical issues. That's insane and it only happens here.

I don't know enough about this to be specific with a solution, but I do know that there must be a better way...and we better figure it out soon!

BTW, I disagree about the VA, at least from my personal experience with my father. My dad had extremely good experiences at the VA here in Florida before he passed some years ago. They were very good to him.

If you're willing to put your personal short term gain before your country you get what you deserve. The wealthy only have so much money then what? That's right the middle class will suffer equal misery for everyone

Consider yourself among the lucky.. Glad it works for you...
