Missouri- I-70 wreck kills four in Callaway County

Four motorists were killed last night on Interstate 70 east of Kingdom City in Callaway County after a tractor-trailer failed to yield for traffic congestion, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

The patrol reported the driver of the tractor-trailer, George Albright, 61, of Clarksville, Tenn., collided with seven other vehicles before crossing the median, the westbound lanes and coming to a rest north of the highway.

Elois Jeans, 81; Beulah Hunter, 94; Anita Gibbs, 55; and Beverly Garrett, 57, all of Kansas City, died in the accident. They were traveling in a Ford Five Hundred. It was the last car to be struck in the accident.

All the passengers but Garrett were pronounced dead at the scene. Garrett was taken to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Passengers in four of the struck vehicles also were injured.

Cynthia Smith, 53, of Columbia was moderately injured in the accident and was listed in fair condition today at University Hospital. Deborah Casey, 54, of Leawood, Kan., suffered serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital. Her condition this morning was listed as serious.

Theotis Casey, 57, received moderate injuries in the accident. He was in fair condition at University hospital. Walter Keith, 65, was taken to Callaway Community Hospital, treated and transferred.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.
