I'm currently in the interview process of being hired on as a shop mechanic 2. I wa wondering if any mechanics or drivers could give me some insight on how it is to work for fedex. Id like to hear from the blue collar worker want the real picture is and not the white collar Mona Lisa they tell you in the interview. I'm curious about the healthcare cost and coverages. It would be myself and my daughter on the plan. They already told what I'd start at pay wise, and that comes second to health care. I currently pay 48/week with no deductibles after the copayment is met.
Thanks in advance for all your help

I cannot speak to how it is to turn wrenches here at Fedex but, they insure 210,000 employees on the Health side. So the benefits are good. And they are hiring people so they can do away with outside vendors doing work on equipment (other than roadside repairs). I have seen 3 new techs in the shop at my barn recently. You will hear from some techs soon.

There's different tiers of health coverage, and what you pick depending on your needs can be tough to figure out on your own. I got a headache and went cross-eyed trying to figure what they'd pay on what based on my guessed future needs. The lady that takes care of human resources for us has seen this stuff over and over and explained it all to me, helped me out with it.. I firmly suggest asking the human resources person for your center to go through it with you. That's what they're there for. :-)

good pay/crappy politics...you'll have that any where tho...I am a driver tho. Welcome to the family and good luck

I'm a driver too, so I don't much about the job details. But I do know the turn over rate for shop guys here is very low. (In my little corner of the world anyways)
I've seen the same guys in these shops forever so it must be pretty good.

:TR10driving03:How do you calculate gratuity? EASY!!! By how fast the mechanic turns your truck up.... usually on average its 10 dollars a mile!!! Buhahahaha!!!!

I have the 'Plan A' health insurance for my daughter and I and this is what I pay a week.
Dental 4.85
Vision 1.15
Medical 25.44

I also have the max AD&D, Life Ins., Dep. Life Ins. for a small cost each week. Something you will want to look into for your family as well.

Good luck on your interview GS. I would love to see the company hire more company wrench turners and get rid of the venders. The pay and benefits are good. I think the only real gripe I heard out of our shop was all the paperwork that is required to do a job, but like they say, the job isn't finished until the paperwork is done.

Thanks hubbarocks. Appreciate the info. My current job, there is a good deal of paperwork, it's entered into a computer. Tedious at times but what can ya do lol

Don't think you'll get away from paperwork at Fedex. Sometimes I think Fred has stock in a paper company.

I'm not sure why hubbarocks costs are so high, I have my wife and kid on my plan (top level $) and with added life and cancer insurance on myself I only pay $30 +/- a week (16.96 med, 1.15 vision 6.30 dental plus the add-ons like I said)

Good luck with the interview. I work in one of the shops here and we all like it for the most part. Some policies don't seem to make much sense but I think that's pretty much the same anywhere you work. They pay us to do what they tell us too. That's my thoughts anyhow.

On the tipping.. I've actually had P&D drivers bring me 6-packs to say thanks for keeping their trucks in good shape. Very unexpected and much appreciated. I don't ever expect it though. I'm happy if the drivers are happy with what we do for them and just say so once in a while. mmmm, warm fuzzy feelings LOL
