Yellow | No Haz-Mat = No Linehaul job?

I'm in a private 160-hour CDL school in Phoenix AZ, starting 4th week tomorrow (Monday). On YRC's website under driver requirements it indicates that a Haz-Mat endorsement is required for linehaul positions...is this one that is in stone? I have a felony from the '80s that will keep me from ever acquiring Haz-Mat endorsement and/or TWIC card, and if there is no lee-way for the Haz-Mat requirement I'll know not to waste anyone's time by applying. Currently I have the CDL-A Learner's Permit, and all endorsements except Haz-Mat and Passengers/bus (have Tankers, Dbls/Triples, Air Brakes), and am supposed to test for the real CDL-A end of next week. I don't want a P&D position...although if it comes down to it I'll drive a garbage truck in the city to keep the roof overhead (bank wants the mortgage payment no matter what).

If the requirement for the Haz-Mat endorsement for linehaul positions is something that cannot be worked around at YRC, can you tell me if that is going to be the case for most/all other linehaul positions at other carriers?

The Google search shows two locations for YRC in this area, one on 51st Ave. in Phoenix and the other in Scottsdale on Keirland Blvd. -- should I apply to both, as separate locations/jobs, or is one a main terminal that might hire for either or location?

Also, in regards to Union...I have no knowledge regarding Union jobs...would I need to apply to and be accepted into the IBT before getting into the job?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

You need a hazmat for ANY driving job in the LTL industry. Every company is going to require you to have it.

My advice would be find another career path as soon as possible.

There are driving jobs where the Haz-mat is not needed. But there are employers that require it even though they never have haz-mat to haul, its a easy way to shrink the pool of drivers that apply. If you are never be able to acquire the haz-mat endorsement, your carrear in the transportation industry will be regulated to the low-paying bottom feeder companies that more than likely are alway's on the brink.

Did your school Ask you about your past prior to enrolling ?

I remember probably 15 years ago went to talk to students at a truck driving school on south side when I was on company road team and guy who had been in jail asked me on the side if RDWY would hire him. Felt bad for him as he seemed sincere that he was trying to turn his life around, yet these jacka$$' at the school we're glad to take his money but not tell him the felony will make it hard to get on with many companies.

UPS (PARCEL), doesn't require a Haz-mat endorsement, but I don't know about your Felony. They have a Hub right where you're at.

Dump truck could be an option too, usually no HazMat required there. Concrete mixer as well. And no, you get the job then join the union. You could, however approach your local union and ask who might be hiring.

About waivers, TSA says:

“It is important . . . that applicants who are
disqualified due to a criminal conviction
should make every effort to apply for a
waiver, assuming the crime is waiver-eligible.
TSA has developed the waiver program to
ensure that individuals who have a criminal
history but no longer pose a threat are not
denied an HME or a TWIC.... TSA grants the
majority of waiver applications received.”

Yes sir, they were/are 100% aware of my record...once my check was cashed though things seemed to change (they got the money, now they're like "Yeah, whatever...). I blame myself for not doing better research before starting the school...but as others have posted, there are construction-type jobs. It will work out one way or the other.

Also, I was recently advised to check with the local Operating Engineers Union, as having the CDL-A would help with employment opportunities there, but I have not checked yet (today is Sunday).

Working for a flatbed carrier or food service like Sysco or us foods may be an option also

YRC has hired felons, people convicted of multiple DUI's. They know the kind of people who apply for trucking jobs, "overweight" uneducated, serial killers, felons and people lacking in social skills. Most companies including YRC don't really care past 7 years. Admit to nothing.
