North Carolina-Crash creates chaos

Truck driver Tony Edwards hopes he saved people's lives.

When Interstate 85 traffic in front of him came to a dead stop Thursday afternoon, Edwards "threw on" his brakes, steered his tractor-trailer left toward a concrete barrier median and hoped for the best.

For Edwards, it seemed to be his only option to avoid ramming someone else in the driving rain.

"I really didn't rear-end anybody," Edwards said, but his trailer jackknifed after he hit the barrier and, sliding forward on the wet pavement, started collecting up to seven other vehicles.

When the chain reaction was over, the front end of Thomas' truck was hanging over the barrier, and the back end of his trailer was draped over a guard rail.

The tractor-trailer totally blocked both southbound lanes of I-85 just north of Bringle Ferry Road, and its trailer load of concrete bricks hung precariously, like a canopy, over four wrecked vehicles.
