Lowe's to pitch in with FedEx SameDay Bot project

https://seekingalpha.com/news/3448067-lowes-pitch-fedex-sameday-bot-project?dr=1#email_link

"The concept being worked on is having robots deliver a gallon of paint or a drill bit to complete an online order quickly to a construction or DIY site."
How will the robot find the right contractor at a job site? Seems most deliveries to work sites with multiple contractors there are usually a pain in bot anyway, finding your guy.

Crash Not Your Fault? FMCSA Says Soon It Won't Hurt Your CSA Score

https://www.ttnews.com/articles/fmcsa-will-no-longer-include-non-preventable-crashes-csa-scores

"There are eight types of crashes that would be automatically eligible for a review. They include a crash in which a commercial motor vehicle is struck by a motorist driving under the influence, struck by a motorist driving in the wrong direction, struck in the rear, or being struck when the commercial motor vehicle is legally stopped or parked.

Other crashes that can be reviewed include those in which an individual attempts to commit ******* by stepping or driving in front of a CMV, a crash that damages a CMV after striking an animal in the roadway, a crash in which a CMV is struck by objects such as falling trees or rocks and instances in which a vehicle is struck by cargo or equipment from another vehicle."

FMCSA to Drivers: Don’t Overthink Personal Conveyance Time

https://www.ttnews.com/articles/fmcsa-drivers-dont-overthink-personal-conveyance-time

"Some common examples of personal conveyance time include time spent traveling to lodging, restaurants or entertainment venues, time spent traveling to a reasonable, safe location to obtain required rest or moving a truck at the request of a safety official during the driver’s off-duty time, DeLorenzo said."

"This is one of those times where it’s OK to continue on the progress of the load as long as you are stopping at the nearest reasonable, safe location. We deliberately don’t define that because that’s a judgment call on the part of the driver.”

He added, “We don’t want a driver parking in a lot that doesn’t have any lighting or any protection. We don’t want anybody parking on the side of the highway where it’s unsafe. You can make the call.”"

The above is the legal side. Company policies may differ. FedEx says "must be unladen".

DOL Issues New FMLA, FLSA Guidance to Employers

https://www.natlawreview.com/articl...ch 2019&utm_source=Robly.com&utm_medium=email

FMLA: 12 Weeks Means 12 Weeks!
"The FMLA entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for specified family and medical reasons.[1] But life is full of the unexpected and 12 is not always enough. So it comes as no surprise that covered employees have often looked for loopholes in order to expand the period of leave available. The latest DOL opinion letter closes two such loopholes:"

Generally speaking, the law requires you to be unladen. But if an officer is willing to sign off on it's use otherwise, that supercedes conventional wisdom and, in general, company policy. Because company policy isn't permitted to impede upon the law, exceptions can be made.

That being said, outside of being asked to move on your break, this isn't something you guys are going to have to deal with much.

Wow, CF. Mark the calendar. This might be the first time you are completely mistaken. Perhaps Canadian law is different? :scratchhead:

1) The Law now makes NO distinction between laden & unladen.

2) Company policy can and does supersede regulations in terms of being more strict. Phone use policy, city driver lunch, for example, as well as the personal conveyance policy. There are more.

3) There are several scenarios where Personal Conveyance option could be used by a city or road driver. Going to the bank, moving the truck, shopping, post office, etc., and/or lunch can all be done during the required off duty period.

4) It's a great feature that the Law allows for. FedEx say unladen only, presumably to prevent abuse - almost certain to occur.

You may have missed this topic being covered back in June 2018.

Then there is this:
ACTION: Notice of regulatory guidance (Issued on: May 31, 2018)

https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/sites/fmc...v-personal-conveyance-regulatory-guidance.pdf

"In changing the guidance, the Agency focused on the reason the driver is operating a CMV while off-duty, without regard to whether the CMV is laden."

"Personal conveyance is an off-duty status. Therefore, there are no impacts to the 11- or 14-hour limitations for truck drivers, the 10- or 15-hour limitations for bus drivers, the 60/70-hour limitations, the 34-hour restart provisions, or any other on-duty status."

Hope all this helps... Should be a benefit worth knowing.

Truck, engine manufacturers urge Trump to skip new tariffs

https://www.ccjdigital.com/truck-engine-manufacturers-urge-trump-to-skip-new-tariffs/#

“Any remedy proposing quotas or tariffs would undermine the benefits of tax and regulatory reform..."

I'd say companies NOT sharing the (windfall) benefits of Trump's Tax reform, themselves RISK loosing said benefit. Keeping all gains, in order to weather a potential downturn, will contribute to & insure a downturn.

Tariffs, if necessary, tend to encourage domestic manufacturing.

"Despite the decline, trucking employment is still 1.9 percent higher than at this point last year, outpacing the 1.7 percent growth in the overall economy."
