"NHTSA’s pre-rule seeks comment on identifying and addressing regulatory barriers to the deployment of ADS-equipped vehicles posed by certain existing FMVSS. The agency said it is is also interested in hearing from the public on various approaches that could be used to measure compliance with the FMVSS for vehicles that are not equipped with conventional controls, including steering wheels and brake pedals. “Public comments received during this stage will help inform NHTSA’s path forward,” the agency noted."

"The pre-rule released by FMCSA seeks public comment on questions related to several regulatory areas to help the agency “better understand how changes to its rules can account for significant differences between human operators and ADS.”

These questions focus on such topics as:

    • Requirements of human drivers
    • CDL endorsements

FedEx Is A Compelling, Long-Term Value Play

https://seekingalpha.com/article/4266241-fedex-compelling-long-term-value-play?dr=1

Long read, but lots of interesting tidbits:

"What is worrisome is the company did cut its outlook only one quarter after raising it. This either means the company can be quickly affected by trade and or a slight slowdown or the management team does not have as a great of insight into the business as it should."

CVSA Seeks Solution to Allow Inspectors to Ticket Shippers for Cargo Securement Violations

“It’s not a question of whether the roadside person is picking the right guy to cite or lay charges against,” Wirachowsky said. “There’s only one option: The carrier. And then if the inspector wants to lay a charge against the driver, he can. But there’s no ability to go back and charge a shipper.”

I have 2 comments for them. Cyber security breaches.
Mixing a very small percentage of autonomous vehicles with human drivers will not be a good mix....

There are huge legal issues to resolve here. If an autonomous truck gets hacked and kills a crowd of pedestrians on a sidewalk in Vegas, who is responsible? Who pays for the liability? If a sensor goes bad and the truck rear ends a busload of nuns and orphans? O wait, nuns won't sue and who cares if orphans die? Oh wait, we all need to sue Coop Dispatch, and Donna can go to jail! All of these issues have been litigated for years in normal autos. It will be 50 years before the legal issues are resolved, and the tipping point on autonomous vehicles is reached.

Tipping point is when 50%+1 of all trucks on the highway are autonomous. When will all (99%) of trucks be autonomous? 75+ years. At that point, drivers will be a thing of the past, and trucks driven by people will be parade vehicles.

My two cents.
