Volvo Debuts ‘Dynamic Steering’ in North America

"Other VDS features include a return-to-center function that enables the steering wheel to return to the center position when the vehicle is in motion, which can help drivers maneuver in reverse or in tight areas."

THAT could really help a new (inexperienced) driver, IMHO. Otherwise, it seems like just another safety item that can fail.
Think I would have to drive one of these trucks first, before commenting on an official level ....

DOT’s freight transportation index rises to new all-time high in July

https://thetrucker.com/dots-freight-transportation-index-rises-to-new-all-time-high-in-july/

"...based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 0.9% in July from June, rising to a new all-time high after declining for two consecutive months, the Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) said Thursday."
I thought the “experts, consultants, analyst’s,and CEO’s all said freight was in the toilet, and now the Feds say, all is good?

U.S. weekly jobless claims rise less than expected

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...ms-rise-less-than-expected-idUSKBN1W41OJ?il=0

"The economy created 130,000 jobs in August. Economists say it is unclear whether the loss of momentum in hiring is due to ebbing demand for labor or a shortage of qualified workers.

Job gains have averaged 158,000 per month this year, still above the roughly 100,000 per month needed to keep up with growth in the working age population."

UPS to hire about 100,000 for holiday season

https://www.fleetowner.com/news/ups...f4009d374921a3155e2938bacc85&utm_source=26594

"The full and part-time seasonal positions – primarily package handlers, drivers and driver-helpers – have long been an entry point for permanent employment at UPS. Many senior UPS executives, including chairman and CEO David Abney and other members of the company’s senior leadership team, started their UPS careers as part-time employees.

Over the last three years, 35 percent of the people UPS hired for seasonal package handler jobs were later hired in a permanent position when the holidays were over, and nearly a third of the company’s current U.S. workforce started in seasonal positions."

More Time to Comment on Hours of Service Proposal

https://www.truckinginfo.com/340717/more-time-to-comment-on-hours-of-service-proposal-1

"FMCSA proposed five key revisions to the existing HOS rules:

  • Changing the 30-minute break requirement to require a break after eight hours of uninterrupted driving time, not on-duty time, and allowing the break to be satisfied by a driver using on-duty/not driving status, rather than off-duty. So if a driver has to take a break to fuel up, grab a cup of coffee, use the restroom, etc., that can count as the required break.
  • Allow drivers to split their required 10 hours off-duty into two periods: one period of at least seven consecutive hours in the sleeper berth and the other period of not less than two consecutive hours, either off-duty or in the sleeper berth. This would allow a 7/3 or an 8/2 split. Neither period would count against the driver’s 14‑hour driving window.
  • Allow one off-duty break of at least 30 minutes, but not more than three hours, that would pause a truck driver’s 14-hour on-duty window, provided the driver takes 10 consecutive hours off-duty at the end of the work shift. This would allow, for instance, drivers to take up to a three-hour break to wait out rush hour, without it affecting their maximum on-duty time.
  • Modify the adverse driving conditions exception, adding two hours to the maximum window during which driving is permitted. The current rule allows for that extra two hours of driving time but it still must be within the maximum 14-hour workday. The proposal would allow that workday to be extended to as much as 16 hours in the case of adverse conditions such as extreme weather or congestion. The definition of "adverse driving" would not change.
  • Change the short-haul exception available to certain commercial drivers by lengthening the drivers’ maximum on‑duty period from 12 to 14 hours and extending the distance limit within which the driver may operate from 100 air miles to 150 air miles."

Troopers are teaming up with truckers to catch texting drivers next week

https://cdllife.com/2019/troopers-are-teaming-up-with-truckers-to-catch-texting-drivers-next-week/

"A distracted driving ticket is $124 in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire is just the latest state to test out “Trooper in a Truck” tactics to catch distracted drivers.

Police in other states like Nebraska, Illinois, and Kentucky, have used truck ride-alongs as a tool to catch texting drivers for years. Tennessee troopers even has their own custom Peterbilt that they use in distracted driving details. The Florida Highway Patrol also has a custom semi truck that they use for various enforcement activities."
